Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey

For those of you who have never experienced a Chuck Palahniuk novel, let me just say that I am sorry. I should have forced you to read one of his books long ago, but it is too late for that now, so let’s just hope that you will start with any of his books, and this one would be as good as any others.

After finishing Rant, I had to lay in bed for about forty-five minutes just soaking in what I had read. Like all CP books, at first you have no clue what is going on, then you think you got it, and then BANG. He sends you for a loop.

The book’s premise focuses on the life of this character, Buster “Rant” Casey, but is told by different people, who are discussing his life after he dies. Buster is a villain to most of the world because he started a rabies plague, which became a huge epidemic. He was also involved in Party Crashing, which is driving around trying to get into car accidents with other people playing the game.

One of my favorite Buster quotes, which there are plenty, “the future you have, tomorrow, won’t be the same future you had, yesterday.”

Take a second to process that line. For those of you who have read Slaughterhouse 5, I think you may enjoy this book. If you have seen Fight Club, you will enjoy this book. Or, if you just want something that will make you think, and probably force you to be a little more cynical, then you’ll definitely enjoy it.

  1. I read Fight Club. Loved the movie, and the book was just as good. Pretty amazing, actually, how close the movie stuck to the book.

  2. Yeah, his books seem like they would be so hard to make into a movie, but David Fincher did an excellent job, as well as whoever adapted the screenplay.
