Bourne Ultimatum

Over the weekend I went to see Bourne Ultimatum, well actually I saw it twice. I definitely enjoyed the first two movies, and this one did not disappoint.

It begins where the second one left off, with Jason fleeing Moscow. We flash forward six weeks to a reporter who finds out about Project: Blackbriar and that started with Jason Bourne. From that point on, Bourne is trying to find out more about his identity, while also staying one step ahead of the CIA, who is tracking him.

I do not want to say too much about the movie since many people may not want me to ruin it for them. I do want to make one complaint though: would a CIA building have such clear windows that you could easily read classified documents from neighboring buildings? Also, how many operatives does the CIA have working in different cities? It seems like every time Bourne goes to another European city, they send in at least four agents to take him down. At this point, I am beginning to wonder if I work for the CIA…

For those of you who have seen the movie, I would like to ask what you thought of the ending? I loved it. I enjoyed that they did not explain the relationship between Nicky and David. We could infer that they dated before he went into the program, hell maybe after they broke up that made up his mind to commit to the program.

Also, I wonder if the writers of Wolverine, were big Robert Ludlam fans. You can definitely see the parallels between Logan and Bourne. Hell in the movie, X2, they say that Logan volunteered for the program.

Does anyone think there will be a fourth movie? There have been new books written based on manuscripts by Ludlum, or something like that. I hope not. I like the idea of the ending being left to our imaginations. To me, he remembers who he is, and it must not have been such a great life if he was willing to give it all up to serve his country.

Anyways, those were some of my thoughts on the film. Let me know what you guys thought of it.

  1. I saw the movie twice as well Josh, and I thought it was awesome.

I really enjoyed the action and plot, and thought the 3rd one tied everything up nicely.

To answer a few of your questions. I thought the ending was perfect and left a lot to be imagined. Everyone definitely has their own thoughts with David and Nicky.

As far as there being a fourth movie, I would love to see one because I am selfish and think these movies are great. For me, they rank in my top three trilogies of all time, and I know a lot of people would disagree with me. I will tell you a couple of things about a sequel. Universal, I think, will make a sequel either way. These movies have been more profitable for them than they ever imagined, and they will not want to stop with Ultimatum opening at $70 million for the first weekend. I do think this will be the last one Damon will be in, and possibly Greengrass directing as well. They want to make this into a Bond type of things with many sequels. Other than the titles of the books, the movies didn’t really follow the books very much, so I can see them continuing this for as long as they can with different actors. I fear the next movie will make whichever actor that takes Damon’s place look like Timothy Dalton.

    ………SPOILER ALERT……….

In any case, I loved how the movie overlapped Supremacy and explained how Bourne escaped Russia and ultimately ended up in New York where he says “Get some rest Pam, you look tired.” That brought the movies full circle and lead up to the final moment at the facility in New York.

As much as the jumpy camerawork that Greengrass uses bothers me (United 93 as well), I thought it made the fight scenes look awesome in the movie.

Well, my tangent is done for now…..I’m going to go watch Supremacy again. 🙂

  2. Jim…I could see Universal make another one with a different actor. I just can not picture who could handle the role. Matt Damon does such a great job.

  3. A few thoughts:

Toby Maguire said he wants to be in the next one…

A 4th book was never written.

When taking a girl to see Harry Potter “accidentally” get there late so the only option left is to see the Bourne Ultimatum.

I definitely enjoyed the movie barring any rational thought about how things operate in the real world.

The shaky cam at times was annoying.

Brian Cox was strangely enough a key figure in the creation of both Logan and Bourne in the movies.

I definitely did like the ending even though it really left us wanting more. But what more would he want to do any way? He got his answers, he will probably just go live the most normal life he can.
