Football Predictions

Okay, I guess it is football time. Well not for me really. I will not get into football until the World Series is over. Alright, that’s a lie, but I just do not get into football like I do baseball. I have decided to do my picks for the season because it is fun, and these will end up being horribly off, but everyone else is free to put up much more educated predictions in the comments.

Hell, I had to look up the divisions to see which teams were in which division. My football knowledge is definitely nowhere near my baseball. I will also put up my Fantasy Football team from my league with Tami and Mike. Since none of you are in the league, you can help me each week by giving me some advice on who to pick up and what the hell to do because I am pretty bad.

  1. ok, i haven’t really done the research yet, but i’ll make some early calls. i usually on focus on week-to-week predictions, but here we go…

    browns

    AFC SOUTH
    colts
    titans
    jaguars
    texans

    AFC WEST
    chargers
    broncos

    raiders

    NFC EAST
    redskins

    saints
    panthers
    falcons
    buccaneers

    NFC WEST
    49ers
    rams
    seahawks
    cardinals

i’m torn about the falcons, i actually think they might be better without vick…you can’t win in the NFL without a passing game. my playoff predictions, before a game is played…

    AFC

    5. bengals 1. colts
    4. chargers 5. bengals 1. colts

    Superbowl
    Saints v. Patriots

i’ll be liable to change this come week 3 when i actually get to watch a few games…i’ll update later!

  2. i’ll make some more predictions. i think the cowboys implode on themselves.

i wouldn’t be surprised if the steelers finished second in the AFC NORTH, i think the bengals are at risk of falling apart too. they are prone to bad behavior and controversy. and i’m not sold on carson palmer

that being said, i think palmer is a lot better QB than big ben, at least at this point. i have yet to be really impressed with big ben’s recognition, form, and decisionmaking. however, he is a very good game manager, which is an important skill.

favre will throw more interceptions than touchdowns. Ladell Betts will rush for more yards than clinton portis, and i’d suggest picking betts up late in your draft or off the waivers. also look to joseph addai to have a good year. if you can’t get LT early, get stephen jackson or frank gore. the 49ers have a generous schedule this season for him, and that should lead to good things, especially if he can break into the endzone more often when they get into the redzone.

  3. i, too, have done zero research. but that doesnt matter, since the league adheres to my wishes as opposed to games being decided by actual skill:

    AFC EAST
    patriots
    jets
    dolphins
    bills

    AFC NORTH
    bengals
    ravens
    steelers
    browns

    AFC SOUTH
    colts
    jaguars
    titans
    texans

    AFC WEST
    chargers
    raiders

    rams

GIANTS over pats in the bowl.
Coldplay and Kanye perform halftime show.

  4. I did a ton of research and compiled a power rankings list based on offense and defense/special teams rankings. The numbers predict, without considering strength of schedule which is pretty important:

    AFC East
    Patriots
    Dolphins
    Jets
    Bills

    AFC North
    Steelers
    Ravens*
    Bengals
    Browns

    AFC South
    Colts
    Jaguars
    Titans
    Texans

    AFC West
    Chargers
    Broncos*
    Chiefs
    Raiders

    NFC East
    Cowboys
    Eagles*
    Giants
    Redskins

    NFC North
    Bears
    Packers
    Vikings
    Lions

    NFC South
    Panthers
    Saints
    Falcons
    Bucs

    NFC West
    Seahawks
    49ers*
    Rams
    Cardinals

Superbowl would be the Patriots and the Cowboys.

The only changes I would make to these from my own opinion is Saints over Panthers in the South, and that the AFC North will probably not yield the wild card team because the top 3 teams will beat up on each other. Still, I think the Steelers have at least as good a shot at it as the Ravens and Bengals do, so it should be a fun season.

  5. Offord, i agree that the AFC North will be fun to watch, it really could be shuffled anyway, well not the Browns, but the other three are all good and going to be in the mix for the division.

  6. Alright buddy, i have been paying a little more attention since i’ve been planning my fantasy football during shifts of eat n park since june…so here’s my projections for you and reasons…

AFC EAST: Right now i have to say this is the strongest division in the AFC. The Patriots have made great acquisitions on both sides of the ball and already have probably the 2nd best quarterback in the NFL in Brady…I am worried about the Randy Moss factor, it’s going to be either a 1400 yard season with 10 td’s or 800 and 4 for Moss, depending on how Brady spreads the ball. Which is exactly why Moss scares me, Brady spreads the ball to all his receivers, not just one, and this could upset lil Randy. The Jets acquired Thomas Jones to bolster their running game because leone washington is fast but not an every down back, this helps their offense immensely. With a power runner like Thomas is leads to better ball control and possession and is especially beneficial for a quarterback like Pennington who does have a gun and can dump off his 6-8 yard passes to his backs, tight ends and slot receivers. Though, they did just trade their disgruntled starting guard to Washington and now leaves Pennington’s blind side vulnerable, which doesn’t help a QB as fragile as Pennington. The Bills are looking good on both sides of the ball with Losman and Lee Evans on the same page all year who knows what their potention is in the passing game, and I like marshawn lynch. Their defense is always decent so no worries their. The Dolphins I think are going to be a surprise this year. Their offense is stagnant, we know this, due to a poor offensive line and the lack of a power runner, despite the talent ronnie brown has. But their new leader on offense trent green will be better than expected. Yes he’s going to get hit…A LOT! But he’s still in the top 5 QB’s over the last 4 season in yardage, TD’s and most importantly, completion percentage which is rare with a super quick release. And it doesn’t hurt that their defense is so good it could score as many points as it’s offense this year.
    1.PATRIOTS, 2.JETS, 3.DOLPHINS, 4.BILLS

    AFC NORTH
The ravens are the clear favorites this year after their phenomenal season last year and their always punishing defense. They signed a great runner, but also oft injured Willis McGahee who will have a huge year. But, with their rising star wide out continually getting hurt in preseason and their aging leader at QB, they are going to disappoint. Cincy will have probably the best offense in the league this year, but their defense is going to kill them, it always does…that, or their entire offensive line will be serving 8-10 week suspensions for public violations or shaking Vicks hand for dog drownings. The Steelers with new coach Mike Tomlin I think will be just fine. The offense is going to shine this year as long Fast willie stays healthy, and big ben is up for a break out year after last years woes. But, Ben doesn’t make or break the season its fast Willie’s health. The defense is always good, though it has looked shaky this preseason and the new signing of Polamalu for the next 4-5 years is a big boost for the steel curtain. The Browns…oh the Browns. The signing of Jamal Lewis who has been declining is good in the sense that they got a bruising back for cheap to make up for a shitty line. The only way the offense is going to be good at all is if they put Brady Quinn behind center, i know it sounds ridiculous, but Brady Quinn is going to be a great quarterback in the NFL. The defense…uh…defense?
    1.RAVENS, 2.STEELERS, 3.BENGALS, 4.BROWNS

    AFC SOUTH
We know what we’re getting with the Colts offense with Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. But, can Joseph Addai handle the full load at running back. They need to get the run defense together. I know they did for the postseason, but they aren’t going to put up numbers on offense like they did last year. The Titans really don’t have anything going for them except for Vince Young and the fact Jeff Fischer still wants to coach their, they are the only 2 holding that club together. The Jags, have the best 1-2 punch at running back with fred taylor and the mini-matchbox car jones-drew, but they have too many questions at QB and WR. Their defense is great and their front guys are great at stuffing the run, but can their corners keep up with the fleet receivers from the colts and texans? The Texans are my surprise team this year. They are going to turn heads on offense with Matt Schaub at the helm and the addition of Ahman Green, who i don’t care what anyone says, is still a 1200 hundred yard back even with the sub-par line. Their defense is going to be great with the top 2 defensive rookies on the same team from last year.
    1.COLTS, 2.TEXANS, 3.JAGUARS, 4.TITANS

    AFC WEST
The Chargers are definately the favorites, but they aren’t going to win the division this year with LT, it’s going to be with the passing game and their awesome defense, I think probably the best in the AFC. Yes, LT will put up ungodly numbers, but they’ll be sub-par for LT…1500 yards, 15 tds. I like the Bronco’s this year, especially on offense. Travis Henry is going to be huge and watch out for the Jay Cutler and Tony Scheffler connection…Sheffler is going to be better than Gates, you watch. Their defense is always good, and shanahan is a genius, he wouldn’t have just traded his DT stud Warren if he didn’t have reserves. The Chiefs I believe will be battling it out with the Raiders for the jokes of the league. On offense the Chiefs have Larry Johnson and…??? That’s right, no one of importance, Tony Gonzalez will have a big year out of the TE position but only because Huard won’t have enough time to look down field with their depleted line (2 all pro linemen retired in the last year and a half)…Johnson’s numbers are going to suffer and the Chiefs are going to second guess that 5 year contract they just chucked his way. The Raiders, have nothing going for them except their defense. Salsbury said they have a playoff type defense, and i agree, but they are a perfect example to prove that defense can’t win championships. The offense is horrible, worst in the NFL, they have no outstanding starters as weapons, a horrible line and they had a bad draft, Al Davis needs to hand over the club or die soon.

    AFC PLAYOFF PICTURE
1.PATRIOTS, 2.CHARGERS, 3. RAVENS, 4. COLTS, WILD CARD: STEELERS AND TEXANS!!!

I’ll post the NFC another time, i see i wrote too much, later fellas

  7. Hmm, who do I thank for these anonymous predictions? Mr.Killarny? Robert? Kacie?

Anyways, nice picks, can’t wait for the NFC…

  8. Okay I guess I should throw my two cents in…
    AFC East:
Pats (off season moves makes this simple)
Dolphins (last year had a shot at the playoffs with Joey Harrington at QB… come on, they have an actual QB with solid and consistent stats in the last five years of his career)
Bills (upgrades in their offensive line)
    Jets (Pennington won’t stay healthy)
    AFC North:
    Ravens (McGahee)
Bengals (A see a new sense of focus, plus Chad Johnson is back to his loud mouthed self, and has set aside money just for fines, I take that as good sign)
Steelers (A good team but their first team offense looks slow this preseason)
Browns (So much potential on offense, yet their defense makes me want to cry)
    AFC South:
    Colts (consistency)
Texans (I agree with them being a surprise team, Schaub always showed potential and with the talent they have, they could make a good run, but the division they are in…)
Jaguars (No receivers stepping up, QB controversy, nice run offense and run defense though, but their defense is porous at best)
Titans (Vince Young has a phenomenal record as a starter, but will he suffer the same fate that Vick did after his successful first season as starter? Also the lack of a supporting cast…)
    AFC West:
Chargers (Rivers has a season under his belt and will continue to gain the trust of QBs, LT is God, and Merriman for a full season… any game with this team will be fun to watch)
Chiefs (Huard did well last year with an already questionable offensive line, and LJ banged his way through, Ty Law also has been reported as “fully recovered” from his ankle injury three years ago, thus making their secondary actually worth more than dirt… like sandpaper or something)
Broncos (Cutler has a lot of potential, but it won’t be enough… he’ll have some growing pains, especially against some tough defenses)
Raiders (Culpepper sucks. Period. Someone shoot radiation at this cancer known as Daunte. The only good thing about this team is its stingy defense. They kept their team in almost every game last season… which is a crazy but true statement)
    TO THE NFC!!!!
    NFC East:
Redskins (For the first time in … oh years the ‘Skins actually have all the same coaching staff, seem to be able to move the ball and make plays on defense. I admit I am a fan of the ‘Skins, but this year they’ll get the first round again because…)
Cowboys (New head coach and new staff rarely ever means a playoff spot; however this team is talented enough to do well.)
Eagles (Injuries to McNabb and questionable backups in case of injuries to many positions makes me rank them so low. Wow, Westbrook had a healthy season. Wow, they traded Donte’. They are stupid.)
Giants (Eli sucks. He’s a solid quarterback at best, who for some reason does better away than at home. Brandon Jacobs will be good, but what of their offensive line? Plus Strahan is holding out still…)
    NFC North:
Bears (Their defense is good, good running game, and they had a great draft, they won’t dominate like last season, but they should do well)
Lions (Kitna is a solid QB with some weapons, and it looks like they made some other key upgrades with their lines)
Vikings (Young QB, young all around… which is why I ranked them over…)
    Packers (Favre… just retire.)
    NFC South
Saints (Drew Brees is the next Christ of QBs. He is out to prove that San Diego was stupid to trade him. Plus the young talent around him… offensive juggernaught)
Panthers (Better talent on paper, the only reason I put them here, and it’s really a toss up with the rest of the teams.)
Falcons (Better without Vick I think. Not much talent at WR and you need some sort of QB?)
Buccaneers (Alstott is out again, will Caddy get hurt again? In truth I can see Tampa getting second in their division if their offensive line is solid… but even Garcia can only do so much with that O-Line)
    NFC West:
49ers (I liked what I saw last year. A lot of talent and Darrell Jackson puts them over the top, unless Alex Smith is an idiot)
Seahawks (Alexander and Hasselback have to prove themselves after last year, and they will, but it won’t be enough)
Rams (Steven Jackson and Marc Bulger tend to get injured, a lot of people forgot this since they were both actually healthy last year. This year they won’t be.)
Cardinals (I could see them doing so well, but they don’t have a running game, ever. They should just go five wide every play, send Fitzgerald and Boldin deep, and have the others WRs do some routes, and then if either F or B are one on one, throw to them. I guarantee they will get the ball or get interference called on the defender.)
Oh, and I’ve done very little research, more will be on my own blog in time right after my first fantasy draft probably.

  9. You thought kacie made those AFC predictions??? seriously i’m hurt man, very hurt. Of course this is killarney, i pay more attention to fantasy football than baseball, but only cuz i play fantasy football for money. Here’s my NFC predictions for ya now…

NFC EAST: this is the toughest division in the NFC, well toughest in it’s very hard to predict. I could see any of these teams coming out on top just cuz of so many reasons…SKINS, look good this preseason, i saw them personally while i was in maryland when they played the steelers, and i had great seats by the way…oh and there were more steelers fans than skins fans…just to throw in roberto’s face, it was great. But, their first team offense looked really good and quick…until kreizel bum rushed campbell, and took him out for the rest of the preseason. It actually made me giggle a little. Their defense looked fast as well, but maybe cuz willie was seeing his first playing time, and clinton portis is not an every down back anymore, and I don’t think Gibbs realizes this…too bad. The COWBOYS have so much potential, on both sides of the ball, but unless they can control the ball on offense which they could with their 1-2 punch of jones-barber at RB and Romo can play consistently I don’t see them making a great run this year. Mainly, because of Owens who is more like a 3rd case gonorrheae that just won’t go away, next year it will be romo saying “and T-O’s the second reason i got crabs.” But, their D looks pretty good, so we’ll see. The EAGLES are going to make or break their season with donovan. If he’s healthy they are the best team in this division, if not, they are screwed. Their blitz schemes are the best in the NFL and they run them effectively, especially with the hard hitting Dawkins. Westbrook is also a great weapon for the eagles, but he’s too fragile to be dependable, but look for PSU alum tony hunt to rack up the TD’s. The only thing the GIANTS have going for them right now is the fact that the retired tiki has gotten Eli fired up finally…too little too late for him eh? Their defense is practically nothing especially with strahan stirring up controversy even tho he’s reporting to camp soon anyways. And, they lost 4 starters in their last preseason game, HAHA.
    1.EAGLES, 2.COWBOYS, 3.SKINS, 4.GIANTS

NFC NORTH: The BEARS are again favorites, simply because of the fact they are the defending NFC champs. They are way too inconsistent on offense, especially with the loss of thomas jones and their 1.2 rated QB. Can Benson carry the load as an every day back in the NFL? I don’t think so, and he’s injury prone. If they get Griese behind center, no team in their division can touch them, especially with that defense and the flash returning kicks. The VIKINGS, have potential…POTENTIAL, but that’s all they have going for them. They have the reigning number 1 rush defense in the NFL, which i believe will hold up again this year, but their secondary is too weak, and their offense is too young. They can have serious ball control if they can get their 1-2 punch at RB going right and their young QB to not make mistakes, but i don’t see it happening and teams are just going to wear down the vikings D. The PACKERS are going to be the surprise team in the NFC this year. I don’t care what anyone says, BRETT FAVRE CAN STILL ZING IT! He makes bone head decisions, but he’s still awesome. He could play for another 3 years if he really wanted to, and he’ll be a winner this year. Yes, they are having an abyssmal preseason, but they are better than they appear, and I think Brandon jackson is going to awesome with running the ball, and Brett has a better chemistry with his receivers this year. Their defense is going to hold up well this year with the return of rookie stand out AJ Hawk, and their secondary is going to lead the NFC in picks. The LIONs have the best receiving core in the NFL, even better than the cardinals, patriots, and bengals, they are unbelievably talented and deep on offense…it’s their defense I’m worried about. Kitna is going to have awesome numbers cuz he’s a solid QB, but they have 3 RB’s to use by committee which doesn’t bode well for their offense and consistency, i think they have trouble with ball control this year.

    1.BEARS, 2.PACKERS, 3.LIONS, 4.VIKINGS

NFC SOUTH. The saints are the deepest team in the NFL, on both sides of the ball. Their defense is quiet in the headlines, but quick and explosive on the field, their secondary is a little shaky. Their offense is unbelievable, and nothing is going to slow it down, even injuries won’t hurt this team offensively because they are so deep…they are the best team in the NFC. The PANTHERS are again going to disappoint, just like last year. They were projected in the superbowl last year and didn’t even make the playoffs, it’ll be the same this year. Their O-Line is too small and Delhomme’s confidence is shot. They’ll have a solid running game because of the double D’s, but delhomme is going to kill the passing game again, tho steve smith will still be the best receiver in the NFC. Their defense can keep them in the hunt tho. The FALCONS, besides Vick agreeing to plead guilty for dog fighting and killing dogs, and then saying their was no dog killings by his own hands, there is nothing worth talking about this team, offensively or defensively. Tho they do still have a great running game, look out for norwood, he could be huge this year. I like the BUCS this year, and i’m not sure why…I think its because garcia with gruden’s offense is going to be flashes of gannon and gruden, and the running game is not going to be as important as people may think for this team. They had one of the best drafts, especially on the defensive side of the ball where they definately needed to get younger, and tho the running game won’t be important as i said before, it will still be just enough with cadillac.
    1.SAINTS, 2.BUCS, 3.PANTHERS, 4.FALCONS

The NFC WEST is going to be exciting this year. So many things going right for every team, i’m just giddy over the fantasy numbers that are going to come from this division. 49er’S have the most talented team in the division, and are going to spread the ball with great efficiency all year as long as darrell jackson remembers how to catch. Vernon Davis is going to be Smith’s number one target and is going to rack up the red zone TD’s taking away from Gore, but he’ll have another great season running the ball, as long as health is on his side. Their defense is young and they drafted the linebacker i wish the steelers would’ve been able to get. The SEAHAWKS have something to prove this year, especially on offense, where injuries crushed them. Hasselback is going to come back as the best quarterback in the division and alexander is going to bounce back to his MVP form. Their defense is great and as good as Lofa Tutupa is, he still doesn’t get enough recognition at Linebacker. The RAMS just signed bulger to a long-term deal…so i’m a little wear of them this year. Their defense is poreous, and now their key component on offense doesn’t have anything to work for…I think they will be the disappointment of the NFC. The CARDINALS are going to have a winning record this year, but they are not going to make the playoffs. I disagree with rob on the running game, they are going to have a great running game, not because of their line, their line is mediocre at best, even with their 1st round pick, tho him being a PSU alum does help their chances, but their running game is going to be an extension of their passing game and because whisenhunt is an offensive genius. Plus, you have to look at their hall of fame Line coach russ grimm who whisenhunt took over with him, this is going to be a much improved offensive line and scheme all together. I think Edgerrin gives a push for the rushing title this year…any takers. But, what’s going to keep them out of the playoff is their defense is not going to be able to hold up all season. They weren’t that great last year and didn’t improve it much at all through the draft or free agency. This team is going to be much like the chiefs of 3 years ago, all bark(offense) and no bite(defense).
    1.SEAHAWKS, 2.49ERS, 3.CARDINALS, 4.RAMS

    NFC PLAYOFF PICTURE:
    1.SAINTS, 2.BEARS, 3.EAGLES, 4.SEAHAWKS
    WILDCARD: PACKERS AND COWBOYS!!

    AFC CHAMPS: CHARGERS
    NFC CHAMPS: SAINTS
(shoulda been the matchup last year)
    SUPERBOWL WINNERS: CHARGERS

  10. Some bold picks there Mr. Killarney. We’ll see how they hold up. You didn’t mention Adrian Peterson in Minnesota who I think could have a nice year. Overall, good ideas but some are a little over the top.

You shoulda told me you were going to the Redskins/Stillers game. My friends went and I was thinking about going but tickets were too much and I had already planned to go to Pgh that weekend. Oh well. Let me know if you ever come to the city.

  11. I didn’t mention adrian peterson because i don’t think he’s going to be a huge impact player this year with chester taylor still the big 1! of the 1-2 punch. He’ll be great for spelling chester taylor and possible goal line situations, as long as his collarbone holds together. He’d be a great fantasy option only in very deep running back leagues where you start 3 running backs, otherwise, the only way to draft him is in late rounds such as josh did, which i applaud…catch ya ladies lata

  12. oh and another thing check this out, i already had a bloggers identity and i had no idea…i guess i’ll no long be anonymous for ya buddy, take care of yourself in da burgh

  13. Ha ha you thought my brain could comprehend more sports information? you just finished training me on baseball, learning stats and names… nnnaaaaddddyyy. But thanks for the optimism! good luck guys!
