Spidey’s Divorce

As some of you may have heard, Spider-man and Mary Jane are no longer married in the Marvel Universe. Many of you probably do not give two shits about this, but whatever, I will talk about it anyways.

First off, I have to say that I have not been reading the Spidey books lately, especially not since JMS took over the writing duties. Anyways, this storyline is called “One More Day” and takes place after a few crushing things happen to Peter. In support of the Super-Hero Registration Act, he unmasks on national television. Later he switches sides and becomes an outlaw, fighting alongside Captain America. The Kingpin hires a hitman to take out either MJ or Aunt May. Needless to say Aunt May catches a bullet and becomes a vegetable.

With absolutely no hope of restoring her life, Peter decides to make a deal with Mephisto (Marvel’s devil), which basically forces him and MJ to erase their marriage from the world’s memories. Luckily for Peter, his negotiation skills must have been pretty good because he got Mephisto to get rid of his unmasking and also the weird new powers he recently found himself with, such as organic webbing (like the movies)…

I remember back when the first movie came out, their was a story that Marvel wanted Kevin Smith to write a Spider-Man story that would get MJ and Peter out of marriage without having them divorce or killing her off. I always pictured Kevin Smith walking out of the room muttering, “You want the impossible” before slumping off to watch his X-Wing dream of writing a new Spider-Man story sink into the swamps of Dagobah lap of another writer…

I have absolutely no real problem with this story. My only concern is that it will just be a quick gimmick, like when DC did something similar with the Flash. It started out great, and then after six issues they went back to the status quo…

Only time will tell…

  1. I really don’t see what mephisto got out of this whole deal. seems pretty one sided to me – unless he also happened to erase the memory of what he and mary jane did in the parking lot of that red lobster on 5th and crescent. i guess then it would make sense.

  2. yeah, neither do i. did he get both of their souls? or maybe he figures that if MJ is single he now has a chance to bang her….
