New Shows

I have watched a few of the new shows I mentioned a few weeks ago and figured now would be a good time to give you all a little rundown on what I think of them.

Gotham

I dig it. I had some reservations about it, but seeing the beginnings of so many of the Batman villains and how the show is re-imagining them has been fantastic. Also, they have done the beginnings of Bruce Wayne’s transformation fantastically.

My favorite part of the show has definitely been the relationship between Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock, played expertly by Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue. It is a very different relationship than what we saw in Batman: The Animated Series, where Bullock is one of Gordon’s best detectives, but a bit sloppy (also, in the comics, he starts out crooked, but then changes his ways, but whatever it could be different in this show).

My least favorite part has been Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney. She is just god awful. Jada has been so over-the-top that it makes me slightly annoyed. At first I thought she was supposed to be the Red Claw, who was an interesting villain in B:TAS, but sadly that was not who they went with, instead they made up a villain for the show and she is pretty much terrible.

Side note:  Did anyone else notice the stand-up comic performing to Mooney in the first episode? I wonder who that could be?

Mulaney
I want to like this show. Unfortunately the pilot was pretty bad. Granted, pilots are usually bad, but this one had a weird way of starting out. There were plenty of funny jokes, but I do not think they needed to use Mulaney’s great story about going to the doctor for anxiety meds as the opening to the show.

The live audience makes it feel like an old sitcom from the 80s or 90s. I will give this a few more episodes to see if the stories pick up and the jokes become less bits from his stand-up and more fluid, if that makes much sense.

Scorpion
This show is silly, but it has a little charm, so I think Lindsey and I will watch it. Granted, if they do another scene where a plane flies above a Ferrari going 200 mph while the pilot lowers a USB cable to plug into a laptop…I will throw my remote through the television.
