Ben Carson is Dumb

I am sure some of you have heard that Ben Carson has an interesting theory about the pyramids. Well if you have not, here is the video.

For those of you that will not watch it for a minute or two, allow me to sum up. He says that Joseph built the pyramids in Egypt to store grain. Seriously, that is what he said at some commencement speech.

“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain,” Carson said. “Now all the archeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain.”

Without even bothering to go look at what many of the actual archaeologists and Egyptologists are saying about his silliness, allow me to point out how this is dumb.EgyptFirst of all, we do not know when Joseph (if he ever existed) would have lived. Most theories put him about a thousand years after the pyramids were already built. Think about that for a second. Egypt is fucking old. Hell, the people of Joseph’s time probably debated and argued about how the pyramids were built just as we do now.

Second, what serious scientists claim the pyramids were built by aliens? Giorgio Tsoukalos does not count as a serious scientist (please do not comment with some other crank who says aliens either).

aliensIf the pyramids were created for grain storage, then you would assume that archaeologists would find grain residue all over the place inside. Also, if you are making it a place for storing grain, why have all these chambers that are difficult to enter? Seems like pretty poor construction.

Another funny thing he says in the speech, it actually comes a few seconds before this video starts, Carson tells us that Joseph knew of a seven year famine coming to Egypt and he stored enough grain to get the country through it. He then marvels at this achievement and says that even today we could not plan enough to make sure we had seven years worth of food stored if there was a famine. Ugh, I hate when people make those claims. You know, the old “we cannot duplicate that achievement today!” No, because we do not need to, however if there was a seven year famine about to hit and somehow we knew it was coming, I am sure some folks could come up with a way to squirrel away some food to last.

Hopefully people realize this guy is an idiot and he quickly disappears from the political conversation.

  1. Now I’m no plant scientist, but where the hell are they farming in all that sand? Why would Joseph not build his storage pyramids on soil?
