Happy Pi Day!

piday-logo-horizontalpiToday is Pi Day. Every year it is on March 14th. Can anyone guess why? Yep, because Pi is 3.1415…well it never ends. For those of you that do not remember, it the circumference of a circle divided by it’s diameter.

During Pi Day, you are supposed to go out to your favorite restaurant and eat a piece of pie. Make sense? We had a few people stop in today at work to celebrate. I used to see more at Penn State. Maybe next year I will try to promote it better at the school down the road.

One of the cool things I remember from my classes (yes, even a CAMS major still learns about Pi) was that the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians calculated Pi fairly close. I would have to look up just how close.

Also, Archimedes (probably the greatest mathematician of the ancient world) calculated it to around 3.14. That is pretty crazy to me. These little lessons in history remind us that ancient folks were not less intelligent than us today.lemon meringueNow speaking of pie, I had a piece of lemon meringue. For years I thought I did not like lemon meringue pie. Then one day, I decided to try some at work. My god! It was delicious. It is definitely my favorite from work. Another favorite is probably our pumpkin creme pie. Mmmmmmm….now I want more pie.

See start out with math and end with food. Can’t beat that kind of post.
