Star Wars Episode VIII Title Announced!

The title for the next Star Wars film has been announced:  The Last Jedi. Naturally this has caused like a billion people to start speculating what it means. And obviously I am no different.

First of all, we have the title itself–The Last Jedi. It could mean that this is the last hurrah of Luke Skywalker (remember what Yoda said “when I am gone, last of the Jedi you will be.” Does this mean that Luke could die and the Jedi would go extinct with him? Or does it mean that Rey becomes a Jedi and when Luke dies, she is the last Jedi? OR, since Jedi is both singular and plural, does it mean Luke and Rey are the last of the Jedi order? Could it mean that maybe there are other Jedi out there, ones that Luke trained before closing up shop after Ben Solo switched teams. If Luke returns, would they be willing to come to his side and take up the fight against the Knights of Ren?

Next we have the color. The red has been used for Episodes III & VI; the final installments of each trilogy. This is the second film. Will there be some finality to this movie as well? Could this be the end of the Skywalker legacy? If so, that would mean that Rey is not related to Luke (I am one of the people who believes she is somehow descended from Obi-Wan Kenobi).

The final oddity is the phrase itself. The second movie in each series was some sort of action title. Attack of the Clones, The Empire Strikes Back. I think that may be reaching a bit too far. This could be Rian Johnson’s way of showing that he is breaking from the mold a bit. Or maybe the title really fits the theme of the movie. I have no clue, only time will tell. Needless to say, I am excited!
