A Political Post

Do not fear, this is not going to be a very long post about the current events (indictments and all that stuff). I am following along, but I am in no position to write anything sensible about what all of this stuff means. Probably be a good post for a lawyer…if only I knew someone…

Nope, today I just want to quickly mention my thoughts on our country. Some of the things that this past year or so has shown me.

I think it may be time for a rewrite of the Constitution. Before you freak out at me, hear me out. The framers of the Constitution would almost definitely agree that another Constitutional Convention is needed and maybe some of the things need to be updated. The world is completely different from where it was in the 18th century. I would almost bet that James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and some of the others would be amazed that we haven’t made radical changes to it already. So much of the document was written with specific fears in mind.

My favorite example is the Third Amendment. When was the last time you heard someone invoke their third amendment rights? Never. Hell, most of you probably had to look up the third amendment. Why is it in there? Well that was something the British government would do back in those days. They would force people to house troops and feed them. I highly doubt the United States military is going to show up at my house today and say “hey Josh, you need to house forty troops and make them breakfast.” Although, I would imagine most people would be happy to do it now.

So maybe it is time to revisit things. Get some really smart progressive and conservative people together and have them hash out some details. Here is a big one, nuclear weapons. When they were invented, the President’s power was drastically expanded because there was no way that Congress would be able to convene and vote in time to counter a nuclear strike from another country. No man should have that much power though, it is terrifying. I mean, it is fine and dandy when the President is a good guy, but what about if he is a narcissistic sociopath who is easily provoked?

Fix some of the election problems. Find a better solution to the Electoral College (honestly, if they went back to Madison and Hamilton’s original intent, it would probably be best), end Gerrymandering (or at least make it a law that states have to use an independent commission). Money in elections (billions of dollars should not be spent on an election), time-frame, etc. All the shit that everyone on both sides complains about, find a way to fix it. Find a better way to track voter registration, change the day of elections. Tuesday? Either make it a national holiday or move it to Saturday.

I am not an expert. I do not have all the answers. But continuing to go the way we are going seems crazy. I can honestly envision a scenario where the United States does not exist in my lifetime. No major war brings us down, but instead we tear ourselves apart.

See, I told you this would be short.
