Happy New Year: 2018 Edition!

Happy New Year everyone! 2017 was obviously a major year for me. The number of posts dropped significantly, I guess being a new father can do that.

As I mentioned in the Best of 2017 post, my decrease has been in a lack of desire to write more often. Not because I have nothing to say or anything like that, but because there are so many things I want to write about, but I feel like I am just ranting and the ranting is really not getting me anywhere.

I do not think I have ever actually made a resolution. I made fun of resolutions a few years ago. This year I am actually going to make two resolutions.

Resolution One: Write More
I think this one is easily doable. I just need to…you know, sit down and write more. While it is fun to write posts about Payton and the rest of the fun family stuff we do, I sometimes forget that this is my personal blog. I can write whatever. If I want to rant ten days in a row about stupid Star Wars fans and their constant bitching about TLJ, then I can do that. If I want to write about baseball everyday, no one is stopping me.

Resolution Two: Get In Shape
I also call this the “do not die resolution.” I have had a very difficult time accepting over the last few years that I am overweight. I am 5’9 and I weigh 185 pounds (185.5 to be precise). That puts me in the overweight category and getting close to obese. I am also not in the best of shape. I have never been one to be in great good average cardio shape, but my inability to run even a short distance without feeling winded is starting to scare me. Dad died when he was 59. I am 37 years old. I do not want to die before Payton finishes college. I especially do not want to drop dead of a heart attack because I was chasing her around the house.

So, I am going to kill two birds with one stone and do something I absolutely hate doing: running. Nothing major. No huge goals or anything. I am not going to say “I plan to lose 25 pounds by July” or “I want to run a marathon when I hit 40.” Nothing crazy like that. Instead, I just want to be in better shape. So, I will run. I cannot remember how far the loop is in our neighborhood, I want to say just over a mile, so I think that is a good starting point. Be able to jog around that without needing to stop. Then see where things go from there. Eventually my lungs should build up some strength, which should lead me to being able to run more, which should then help me actually lose some weight…and you can see how this goes on and on, right?

See that, two fairly simple resolutions: write and run. Hell, I could probably write about running and that will help me have more posts. Boom, look at that, achieving those goals!

Anyways, I hope everyone has a fantastic 2018!

  1. Ha. You’re like me. I’m 5’9 and somewhere around 190, so I decided to run a couple years back. First year, it went okay. This past year, less so. Just assembled a rowing machine over the weekend so that the single-digit temps aren’t an excuse not to exercise. I wish you better luck than I’ve had.

    1. Weird, I always assume you are much taller than me. Which is insane since we have never met and I have no reason to make that assumption. In my head, you are 6’0.
