Not My Job

A friend of mine posted something on Facebook today that made me laugh.

One of the biggest problems we have today is the saying, “it’s not my job”. Its a lazy cop-out and may be one of the reasons we have so many unanswered issues today.

I hope he does not think I am making fun of him. I agree with him that “not my job” is an excuse. The appropriate response if something is not your job should be something like “that is not my job, but allow me to find or direct you to someone that can help.”

But then I started thinking about situations where you wouldn’t want someone taking initiative. Say you run into a hospital because you have a screwdriver stuck in your knee (we have all been there) and you see someone with a hospital badge, you hobble over and say “hey, I need help, my knee has a screwdriver stuck in it.” The guy says “hey man, that’s not my job, but let me take a crack at it.” Turns out the janitor is not the best person to remove screwdrivers from knees.

Maybe in that situation, we want that guy to say “not my job, but let me find someone to help.”
