It was announced that Jerome Flynn has joined the cast of The Dark Tower for Amazon. It is unknown which character he will be playing. I have a few guesses though. The story is supposedly going to be the origin of Roland, so I think Flynn would be perfect for three possible characters…there are probably some spoilers for you non-book folks out there.
- Cortland Andrus-Cort is the battle hardened teacher of the boys who will become gunslingers. Cort calls them maggots and treats them like absolute dirt. In order to earn their guns they have to best him in combat. Roland does it at the age of 14 and he uses his falcon as his weapon. I think Flynn could pull off the foul-mouthed teacher. Although, I always envisioned Cort as much bigger. I think Roland describes him as having no neck and being a large man, who is practically all knotted muscle.
- Steven Deschain-Roland’s father. He is a descendant of Arthur Eld and he carries the sacred guns that were made from Arthur’s sword. I could see Flynn playing the elder gunslinger. Steven has that great scene where he barges in on Roland while he is with a prostitute (he is celebrating his victory over Cort). If I remember correctly, Roland tries to be a man, but his father is still faster and stronger. I think it would be a different role for Flynn than Bronn. Steven Deschain is honorable and a great leader. It would be a chance for him to show off his acting chops.
- Eldred Jonas-The leader of the Big Coffin Hunters. Jonas is a failed gunslinger (meaning he lost his test). He has a limp and he is very quick on the draw, but in the end he is no match for a true gunslinger, even if Roland is just a boy. I would love to see the scene at the bar when Cuthbert is going to shoot one of the Coffin Hunters with his slingshot when another Hunter draws a gun on him, to which Alain shows up and puts a knife to his back. Jonas shows up and has the drop on Alain, but then Roland ends up getting the drop on Jonas. I would love to see Flynn in that role. He would pull that look off perfectly well. Eldred Jonas cannot believe some kid outflanked him.
It does not matter who is playing, it will be awesome.
