You are looking at the first ever image of a black hole. I remember reading about the Event Horizon Telescope project a few years ago and it is now amazing to see it come to fruition.
The image confirms many of the theories about black holes laid out by Einstein. The glow is actually superheated gas falling into the hole. Light cannot escape a black hole, so the ring is basically the only way we can actually “see” one.
Black holes are fascinating and hopefully the team behind this will learn/confirm even more things about them over time.
