2020 Democratic Primary: Kirsten Gillibrand

Who: Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator from New York

Slogan: “Brave Wins”

Positive: Gillibrand has a great track record as a senator and she leans decently left on plenty of issues (and has the voting track to back that up). I think her big selling point is that she is running on women’s issues. She wants to end the gender wage gap, enforcing (and expanding, if I recall correctly) the paid family leave, and providing tax benefits for companies that provide on-site child care.

Negative: She upset the Democratic establishment when she pushed for Al Franken to step down. She also said that Bill Clinton should have resigned after the Monica Lewinsky scandal. She hitched her wagon to the #MeToo movement and that may turn some voters off from her.

My Thoughts: I am consistently shocked by how little traction her campaign has garnered. I like her and think she should be doing better than her current polling and donation numbers suggest. I hope she has a good debate and can really have a great moment to shine through. I love her logo, the black background with the pink 2020 really stands out and definitely gives you the sense that she is engaging women. Whoever designed it made a smart choice by not going too light of a pink, but instead that darker pink, rose color really works.

Odds: 80/1
Not great at all. That is a 1.2% probability. She really needs to come out swinging at the debate. If she is with Joe Biden, she needs to be vocal about Anita Hill and maybe go for a shot at him by asking if he wants to smell her hair. I am not a political strategist, she should probably not listen to me.
