Know Your President: Week Twenty-Five

Party: Republican

Fact One: This president believed in pluralism (or the idea that no group should be banned in America). He pushed back against his own party’s immigration policies. He also helped end the anti-Catholic sentiment throughout the government.

Fact Two: He was worried about Japanese controlling the Pacific, which would leave the west coast open to attack. He felt the annexation of Hawaii would be a way to dominate the Pacific.

Fact Three: Went to war with Spain, which ended quickly and resulted in Cuba gaining freedom; while Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines fell under American control.

Fact Four:  This president sent troops into China to rescue missionaries and other Americans without seeking approval from Congress. This set a precedent other presidents used.

Fact Five: Was assassinated by Leon Czolgosz. This led Congress to pass legislation which gave the Secret Service the duty of protecting the president.

Quotes:
“War should never entered upon until every agency of peace has failed.”
“In the time of darkest defeat, victory may be nearest.”
“We need Hawaii just as much and a good deal more than we did California. It is Manifest Destiny.”
