Penn State Sports Wrap-Up (2/6-2/15)

I could tell that many of you were worried that I quit doing this wrap-up, since I received thousands of emails demanding to know where it was at. Do not fear, I have decided to move it to a different day (I think Tuesday probably works best–it was difficult over the weekends because, well we do stuff and that seems when a ton of events actually happen).

Wrestling
Defeated Nebraska at home 21-13. Weirdly close, but the Nittany Lions had a few guys out for this dual meet. The wrestling team clinched the Big Ten regular season title by going 8-0, while improving to 16-0 overall and retaining their #1 ranking. The following wrestlers are ranked #1: Roman Bravo-Young, Nick Lee, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks, and Max Dean.

Volleyball
Men: Two away matches this week. First they defeated Sacred Heart 3-0, then they beat Harvard 3-0. They are now 9-3 (4-0). They are ranked #4 in the country.

Softball
The softball season kicked off last weekend with the Northern Lights/Southern Nights Invitational. The Nittany Lions went 3-2 with wins against Eastern Kentucky 4-0, Akron 3-2, and Pitt 1-0. They lost to #11 Mizzou 2-1 in extra innings and UConn 2-1. Bailey Parshall (pitcher) was named to the All-Tournament team and recorded her 400th career strikeout.

Golf
Men: Florida Gators Invitational–10th out of 14 (Day 1), Tied for 7th out of 14 (Day 2)
Women: UCF Challenge–Tied for 17th out of 18 (Day 1), 17/18 (Day 2), 18/18 (Day 3…yikes)

Gymnastics
Women: Lost at Michigan 197.600-195.875 (1-4, 0-4)

Hockey
Women: A nice week for the ladies ice hockey team. They went 3-0, with wins at Cornell (5-0) and LIU (10-0, 2-0). They are now 17-9-4 (7-3-2-2). They are ranked #14.

Lacrosse
Men: Lost 13-12 to #20 Villanova. They are now 1-1 (0-0).
Women: Season has not started yet, but is ranked #25 to start the season.

Fencing
Duke Dual Series
Women: Five wins against–Brandeis (21-6), Duke (15-12), Air Force (22-6), Boston College (21-6), UNC (16-11)
Ranked #7
Men: Four wins and a loss–Brandeis (25-2), Air Force (16-11), Boston College (14-13), Johns Hopkins (18-9). They lost to Duke (18-9)
Ranked #3

Tennis
Men: They went 2-1 this week. First up they beat Dartmouth at home 4-1. Then they defeated Liberty at home 4-3. Unfortunately they lost at Princeton 6-1. They are now 4-3 (0-0) on the season.
Women: Split this week 1-1 on the road. They defeated Xavier 4-0, but lost to Kentucky 4-3. They are 4-4 (0-0) this year.

Track & Field
Music City Challenge
Women: Hailey Zurich (Pole Vault), Yasmin Brooks (60m Hurdles), Allison Johnson (800m) all took first place.
Ranked #21
Men: None of the guys won, but many of them had personal bests and finished in the top four or five.

Basketball
Women: Another rough week for the women’s team. They dropped three games this week. They lost 78-72 to Northwestern, 81-77 at Purdue, and 71-62 at Rutgers. They are now 9-15 (3-11) and have lost eight straight.
Men: The men lost a tough one to Michigan at home early in the week 58-57. Then they lost 76-70 at Minnesota. I think that one was frustrating because of late turnovers. But then they defeated #19 Michigan State at home 62-58. The men are 10-12 (5-9). This was the first win against a ranked team for Micah Shrewsberry. They have six more games before the Big Ten tournament, they need to win a majority of those and then have a strong tournament if they even want to sniff the NCAA tournament.

Football
Former Nittany Lions Grant Haley & Nick Scott are Super Bowl champions! Micah Parsons won the Defensive Rookie of the Year (and finished in second for DPOY behind TJ Watt). I forgot to mention this a few weeks ago, but Wisconsin signed Bobby Engram as their new offensive coordinator. He had been with the Baltimore Ravens. He is now one of the highest paid assistants in the Big Ten.

In other football news, the 2022 opener at Purdue has been moved to Tuesday, September 1st. Naturally fans love hearing that kind of news (just kidding, people freaked out with the usual stuff about Penn State not being respected by the Big Ten, even though Ohio State opened the season on a Thursday last year).
