Penn State Sports Wrap-Up (3/10-3/17)

Golf
Men: Finished 15th out of 15 at the General Hackler Championship. On a positive note Patrick Sheehan finished 7th with a 7-under, 209.
Women: Finished 9th out of 17 at the Briar’s Creek Invitational.

Baseball
The boys took two out of three from UMass. They won 10-6 on Friday, then lost 11-4, but rebounded on Sunday with a 1-0 victory. 5-9 to start the year.

Softball
The ladies split with Delaware (won the first game 1-0, lost the second 6-4). During the week they won at Pitt 6-0. The Lady Lions are 11-11.

Fencing
The fencing team did well at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. The men had one champion: Clement Perrier (saber). They also had two silvers (Kamar Skeete–saber, Sebastiano Bicego–foil) and two bronze medalists (Arwen Borowiak–foil, Ryan Griffiths–epee). The women also did well, but no one finished in the top three. I have no clue how many spots qualify for Nationals.
Men and Women are both ranked #5

Hockey
The men’s team lost to Minnesota 3-2 in the Big Ten tournament semifinals. They finished the season 17-20-1 (6-17-1).

Gymnastics
Women: Beat New Hampshire 196.550-195.775. They have the Big Ten tournament this weekend.
Men: Defeated Springfield 395.300-378.700.
Ranked #7

Lacrosse
Men: Lost two this week. First to #4 Cornell 16-15, then they dropped another close one to Bucknell 12-11. 2-6
Women: Won 17-8 vs. Saint Joseph’s. Defeated Towson 15-6. 5-2
Kristin O’Neill–B1G Midfielder of the Week

Tennis
Men: Went 1-2 at the ASU Spring Break Tournament. Lost 4-1 to #33 Texas Tech. Defeated Idaho 4-1, but then lost 4-3 to #62 Tulane. Yeah, I have no clue what those rankings mean. Is Penn State that bad that they are not even ranked in the top #62? I guess not, since they lost to Tulane. 7-7
Women: The women won against East Carolina 4-0, then lost to UNCW 4-3. 6-7 (0-1)

Track & Field
Penn State had four athletes compete at the NCAA Indoor Championship. Allison Johnson the 800m Big Ten champ finished 14th, while Victoria Tachinski (who finished 2nd behind Johnson) bested her teammate with an 11th place finish. Mallory Kauffman placed tenth in shot put. Evan Dorenkamp placed 12th in the mile.
Allison Johnson was B1G Freshman of the Year
Mallory Kauffman was Mid-Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year

Volleyball
Men: They took on #13 Ohio State again and once again defeated them. This time it was 3-1. The men are now 15-3 (8-0).
Ranked #2
Toby Ezeonu was EIVA Defensive Players of the Week

Basketball
Men: Took down #25 Ohio State 71-68, but then lost to #9 Purdue 69-61 in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. They finished the season with a 14-17 (7-13) record for first year coach Micah Shrewsberry.
