The Marvels

I missed this movie when it was in the theater. After a few weeks I had a night with nothing happening, and I went to buy tickets, and it was already out of the theater in Johnstown. I want to say it was like four weeks. Probably not a good sign. Once it was out on digital, I contemplated buying it, but could not justify spending $20 for it when I had heard nothing great about it. So I waited until it came out on Disney+. I watched it last night and…it was alright.

There were some really great things about the movie, but it was ruined by a fairly bland story. For example, the relationship between Kamala, Carol, and Monica was excellent. I loved Ms.Marvel’s enthusiasm and excitement when meeting Nick Fury or Captain Marvel. I also enjoyed the idea of Carol being responsible for the downfall of the Kree home world. But it was just silly that she did not return to see Monica because she was ashamed of what happened there.

The plot was a little idiotic. Dar-Benn using jump-point technology to siphon off the things her planet needs (while also destroying things Carol loves). It was just not very clear early on why she was doing anything, and when it was revealed why, it was not very impactful. The movie could not decide if it wanted to be fun/silly (a planet where everyone sings), heartwarming (family love), or serious (repercussions for taking down the bad guy). Also, the flerkin eggs, and then using the baby kittens to swallow all the staff of SABER was unnecessary and only there for the cute kitty factor.

Also, the special effects were…not very special. There was a time when the MCU movies always looked top-notch, but this one had a few moments that looked bad (it looked especially clunky when they had Monica flying). That being said, I thought they did an excellent job with Kamala’s powers, so that is a plus. They looked more realistic than they did in the show.

I enjoyed the meetup at the end between Kamala and Kate Bishop. It was a funny version of the Tony Stark/Nick Fury meeting in Iron Man. I am sure some fans will be screaming “how would Kamala know what Nick said???” Who cares! It is just a movie, it is supposed to be fun, and that was fun. I look forward to a Young Avengers show or movie (Kamala, Kate, Cassie, Love possibly, Patriot–didn’t we meet that kid in the Falcon show?, Riri, America…maybe some others, Wanda’s twins from a different universe?).

The end-credit scene was a bit meh. I know people were excited about Hank McCoy making an appearance, but it did not do much for me. Will this be another dead-end thread, or will this be something we see in Deadpool 3
