Decades Project: 1940s Movie–She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

I have mentioned my love of Westerns before, and it would be criminal if I did not talk about John Ford films. Fort Apache is a great movie, but I think many people tend to forget about She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. I watched this with my dad at some point when I was young, along with other Ford Westerns. This was probably his favorite Wayne/Ford film. Dad always felt this was the movie that showed John Wayne’s range as an actor.

Also, if you are into old movies with beautiful shots, this one is up there. It was nominated for Best Cinematography, and you can see why with a shot like this…

I feel like Quentin Tarantino and Robert Richardson watched the infamous lightning scene before they filmed The Hateful Eight. For those that do not know, there was a thunderstorm rolling across the plain, and Ford wanted to keep filming, but Winton Hoch (cinematographer) was against it, saying the cameras would become lightning rods. This story is disputed though (some say Hoch was down with it, since Ford said he would take the blame if something happened).
