Captain Marvel

I seriously think Marvel is getting better with each movie. It is crazy to think that way when you consider how good Iron Man was back in the day. You would think over this long of a time period and the number of movies, that the quality would drop, but instead it seems to be getting better.

I am not going to lie, from here on out, there will be spoilers. If you have not seen the movie, then go see it and come back to read this.

I loved how the story started off without us knowing what was going on. Carol Danvers is fighting for the Kree (all we know about them is that Ronan the Accuser was one of their fanatics) against the Skrulls. As the movie goes, we learn more of her backstory (as she learns it as well). I liked this method, instead of getting the origin story where she learns how to use her powers and all of that normal stuff. Instead, she has her powers and we have to learn who she is.

The movie was much funnier than I was expecting. First of all, the 1990s Nick Fury was hilarious compared to the one we see later. I am sure the stuff he has been through tempered that humor. Also, Brie Larson was hilarious at times. I loved the gag of her blowing the hair out of her eyes (they did it a few times). Or when she screams at the Skrull.

The Skrull leader, Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) was excellent. He cracked me up with some of his jokes. I figured that Jude Law the villain (I mean, he was pals with Ronan), but I loved how the fight ends: with her not needing to prove herself to him.

It would be impossible to talk about this movie without mentioning all of the haters out there. Like Black Panther there was a contingent of awful humans who have decided to hate this movie because of whatever politics they feel these movies leans towards. This is a movie about a female superhero, so we get those rage filled men out there flipping out about women. If you go to any article and read the comments, you can usually find them. To be fair, that does not mean that every person who dislikes the movie is part of that group, and it does not mean any criticism of the movie should be disregarded.

One of the cool things was seeing so many young girls in the theater. They were there on their own, they were cheering and excited. Every time Marvel or DC decides to change a character (gender, race, sexual orientation…see: Riri Williams as Iron Man, Jane Foster as Thor, gay Green Lantern, Miles Morales, etc), these types of fans scream about creating there own damn heroes, why change? But then when these companies use Black Panther or Captain Marvel, they complain about that too…seems weird to me.

Anyways, that rant is over.

Can we talk about Goose now? How awesome was that cat? Or should I say how disgustingly cool was that flerken? I loved when the Kree scans it and says threat level high, but Fury is just a low-level threat. I enjoyed the end-credit scene of Goose spitting out the Tesseract.

Speaking of the Tesseract…that thing has a convoluted history. The Red Skull has it, then Howard Stark finds it, then it gives Captain Marvel her powers, then Goose eats it and spits it back out. It goes dormant for awhile, then Fury brings Selvig in when it wakes up (he is under Loki’s control). It heads to Asgard for safe keeping, but then Loki snags it after Hela does her thing and that is how Thanos ends up with it. Damn, it took me a minute to remember all of that.

The other end-credit (mid-credit?) scene was a tie-in to Avengers: Endgame. The survivors are trying to figure out how the pager works (it apparently is transmitting without a power source) and Cap wants to know why Fury hit it before he died. He wants to know who is receiving the message. When he turns around, Carol is standing there. Oh yeah, Thanos is going to get a run for his money now.

So what did you think of the movie?
