Jammin’ With Josh: Bush

This is Jammin’ With Josh. Each week I take a look at one of the bands that I love. Or perhaps it will be a band that I just discovered and think you should check out. Or maybe it will just be a way for me to post music videos. Honestly, no one will ever know.

Let me take you back to 1996ish. Maybe ’95, I cannot remember, I am old. The band Bush was becoming pretty popular. There was a picture of Gavin Rossdale picture hanging in the locker beside mine. The owner of that locker would talk about Bush and how amazing Rossdale was (and how he was hot). I kind of assumed they were some silly boy-band. Granted, I knew the song “Machinehead” but for some reason I did not think it was them. Anyways, they were pretty big at my school during that time because of a concert at the Bryce Jordan Center (I swear that half of my school went to that show). Naturally, that made me dislike the band even more. I know, I was a weirdo.

Flash-forward a few years to my freshman year at Gannon. A kid on my floor had a ton of CDs and this was the beginning of the CD-R era. I ended up burning most of his stuff, including Sixteen Stone and Razorblade Suitcase. Every song I listened to was awesome. How was it that I hated this band? I was an idiot.

The song pretty much everyone knows is “Glycerine”, which is also probably one of my favorites.

The underrated song that I wish everyone would listen to is “Letting the Cables Sleep.” I remember when The Science of Things came out, the big single was “The Chemicals Between Us”, which I think is an awesome song, but when I bought the album, this was the song that hit me the most. It feels so sad…

The song that probably helped me bridge that 1996 hate to 1999 love gap was “Mouth.” Not because I heard it on the radio or anything, but because I remember renting An American Werewolf in Paris (I think my brother and I watched it), and really liking this song. Then I found out it was Bush and was like “huh, maybe these guys do not suck.”

Come on, is there a more quintessential 1990s alt-rock band than these guys?

And just in case you were wondering if they were still together…the answer is yes. They actually put out an album last year and I heard one this song on Pandora. As soon as it started, I knew it was a Bush song.
