Star Wars Comics

One of my employees bought me a comic as a thank you for an opportunity I gave her. The comic was the hardcover trade of Star Wars. The Marvel series by Jason Aaron. It was freakin’ awesome! Thank you Carey for the great gift. Unfortunately, this means I have to buy the next one because I am curious to see where this story goes.

The story is set between episodes IV & V. Luke has no clue what it means to be a Jedi and he no real Force abilities. Han & Leia’s relationship is starting to develop a little more, plus we see Han getting more involved with the Rebels. The first issue has the gang attacking an Imperial weapons factory, where they run into Darth Vader. It has a fantastic Vader moment…

The rest of the comic deals with Luke heading back home to see if Obi-Wan left anything that could give him some ideas of what to do next. Unfortunately, he runs into a certain bounty hunter, who Vader has hired to learn the name of the pilot who blew up the Death Star. When Vader finally learns the name, he reacts…well, about how you would expect a guy to react when he finds out that he has a son, who was hidden from him by his former master and the woman he loved.

It actually makes sense too. Remember when the Emperor says “we have a new enemy, Luke Skywalker….the son of Skywalker…” Darth Vader does not react with surprise like “WHAT? That kid is my son!?” Obviously that would have spoiled the big ending of the movie, but now we at least have a plausible reason: Vader already knew about Luke by that time in Empire.

Anyways, if you are a Star Wars fan then I definitely recommend picking up this comic. It is worth it just for John Cassaday, Simone Bianchi, and Stuart Immonen’s great art. Jason Aaron crafts a very compelling story that just makes you feel like you are back in the movies with those characters we all love.
