RIP President George H.W. Bush

As most people have heard, former president George H.W. Bush passed away at 94 years old.

The 1988 Presidential Election was probably where I first took an interest in politics. I knew my dad was a democrat (although, I do not think he or my mom actually voted) and was rooting for Michael Dukakis. I would have been around eight years old at that time and I remember a kid at school saying that if my dad voted for Dukakis then we would lose our guns and I would never be able to hunt. That was terrifying, so I went home and told my dad that and he laughed. He explained a wedge issue (although he did not call it that, but just said that the gun issue is something both sides use, but will never actually do anything, they just need it to get people riled up).

I may have disagreed with Bush’s politics, but I cannot deny that he was an amazing individual and someone who deeply cared for his country. One of the cool facts that I learned was that he played baseball for Yale and that they played in the first two College World Series finals. He was captain of the team in 1948. Pretty cool.
