Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

OH MY! How freakin’ good is this movie? It has everything you would want from a Spider-Man movie. Action? Check. Humor? Check. Romance? Check? Great story? Check.

For those of you that are not familiar with the story, here is quick rundown. Miles Morales is a normal kid, who gets bit by a genetically engineered spider. An evil villain opens a dimensional rift causing a bunch of other Spider-people to come to his universe. He has to learn how to be Spider-Man, while at the same time helping the others get to their respective homes.

Okay, that was the spoiler free edition. From here on out…SPOILERS!

-I pretty much stopped reading comics around the time of Miles Morales. That is not the reason I stopped. In fact, I thought it sounded like a cool idea and I loved Brian Michael Bendis’ run on Ultimate Spider-Man. I think I remember Spider-Man’s death in that series. It was cool for me seeing a character on the screen that I have no familiarity. Also, I loved the Bendis reference in Miles phone.

-The whole beginning, with Miles getting his powers, then witnessing Spider-Man’s death (who was played by Chris Pine) to the meeting of the other Spider-Man was fantastic. I loved Jake Johnson’s Peter B. Parker. The whole sad, pathetic Parker who is recently split up and kinda overweight was perfect. The reluctant mentor to Miles.

-The rest of the Spider-folks were awesome as well. I mean, John Mulaney as Spider-Ham? Nicholas Cage as Spider-Noir (who is completely blown away by the colors on a Rubik’s Cube). Spider-Gwen and the budding relationship with Miles was a nice feel good part of the story. I even loved the anime Peni Parker.

-The plot actually had some emotion behind it. Kingpin trying to bring back his wife and child. Definitely not a simple “I want to rule the world” or “make tons of money” plan.

-The animation blew me away! Honestly, it was unlike anything I have seen in recent years. It felt like a comic book, but it also had the feel of a live action movie at times.

-I enjoyed the post-credits scene. Miguel O’Hara (voiced by the always cool Oscar Isaac) learns about the inter-dimensional battle (he is Spider-Man 2099) and creates a device to allow him to travel to the different universes. He says he is going back to the beginning. He goes back to the Spider-Man cartoon from 1967 and runs into Spider-Man…they do a good joke about the Spider-Man pointing meme…

-Lord & Miller are fantastic at making a humorous film. One of my favorite jokes is when the first Spider-Man is saying who he is and he gives a rundown of all of his accomplishments, then we see him dancing down the street and he is like “yeah, that happened, we try not to talk about it.” A great rip on the terrible Spider-Man 3 scene.

-Will Tom Hardy show up in the next movie as Venom? I really hope so.

Anyways, if you saw the movie, what were your favorite parts? If you have not seen it yet, then drop what you are doing and go see it!
