2020 Democratic Primary: The Candidates

Quick update for my anyone interested in the fantasy league that I am creating, there is still time to join. There is a Facebook group, which will have more information. The contest will begin a week before the first debate.

I plan to write about each candidate. One of the weird things is that I have no clue who I am going to back in this election. Obviously it is still very early, and many of these candidates will rise and fall over the months.

I wonder if many of my fellow Democrats are having troubles with this many candidates. It is a good opportunity to evaluate why we vote the way we do. What issues are important and how do the different candidates represent those issues?

I think these are my main issues…

Climate–I am not some tree-loving hippy, or even someone who does anything remotely environmentally positive (I do not even recycle). Yet, climate change is very important to me. I want a president who sees this as a major threat and wants to change policy that will actually help the rest of the world.

Economy–I think there are numerous ways to help bolster the economy: raising the minimum wage, taxing the rich, and all of the other stuff you hear from most of these candidates. Also, I lump the free education into here as well. I think offering free state schools/trade schools will give younger people a chance when they graduate instead of being saddled with enormous amounts of debt.

Healthcare–I think each candidate will probably have some form of Medicare For All/Single Payer/Insert Name Here. I am all for anything that helps people get the healthcare they need.

Criminal Justice Reform–Our system is flawed. Not sure where a person would even start, but as Rage Against the Machine once said “it has to start somewhere, it has to start sometime, what better place than here, what better time than now!”

That is not all, but those are kind of my top four (I think). I tried to be fairly vague and nebulous about them because I do not want to get hung up on an idea that I have and cause myself to miss out on the message of a candidate. Obviously other things are important too (however, there is probably not much difference in most candidates in regards to some of those issues OR the issue is too big and will go nowhere, no matter who is in office).

How are you evaluating candidates? What issues are important to you?
