Happy James Polk Day!

Today is Presidents Day. Instead of honoring Washington or Lincoln, why not take a minute and celebrate a different president? James Polk, the 11th President of the United States.

Polk is known as an expansionist president. He expanded the borders all the way to the Pacific with the Oregon Territory. Also, he annexed Texas. Granted, this resulted in a war with Mexico, but hey, not everyone is perfect.

Polk served one term. Not because he lost, he did not run for a second term. He said that he was not going to right from the beginning. He set out to achieve a few goals and he did them, then left office.

Now before someone points out that Polk was a slaveholder or that his expansion of territory did not come without issues, realize that I am well aware of those things. I also understand that if he would have lost to Henry Clay in ’44, there is a good chance that Texas and California remain independent republics. Who knows how history would have turned out.

Also, James Polk had a pretty sweet mullet.
