The Bill Maher Stan Lee Rant

A few people have sent me messages asking for my opinion on Bill Maher’s recent rant about Stan Lee.

Meh. I honestly do not disagree with him. I read his blog post in November, he never said anything bad about Stan Lee. I also read the comments from outraged fans and the silly open letter from Stan’s company. Come on, no one ever claimed Shakespeare was childish.

I will disagree with Bill that comic books are not profound and serious works. There are definitely examples out there of comic books that compare to great books. Bill obviously has not read them and makes the mistake of equating comic books with just superhero stories. No big deal, most people assume the same thing.

I am not going to stop being a fan of Bill Maher because he has an opinion I disagree with either. He used to promote the anti-vaccine movement (I think he realized the error in that) and he still believes GMOs are bad. Hell, I even disagree with some of his political stances. However, I watch him because he is entertaining. I think he is a great comedian and he discusses topics that other political shows may shy away from.

There is something true to what he says about growing up though. I do not read comics anymore. I stopped about seven or eight years ago. I try to pick stuff up every once in awhile and I just cannot seem to get into them. Honestly, I think I have outgrown them.

  1. I don’t think you can honestly say you’ve outgrown comics when you post about how excited you are for every superhero movie. I think you just consume the material in a different way now. If you still like superhero stories, what did you really outgrow? Paper and ink?
