The Birth of Logan Alexander

It all started last Wednesday. Lindsey felt like she was having contractions. We went to the appointment on Thursday and we were prepared for an early delivery. Instead of being totally unprepared like with Payton, we actually brought our bags and all of the stuff we would need. The doctor said that she was about a centimeter dilated, so not yet. However, the doctor did say that if anything progressed over the weekend to come back.

The pain was getting worse each day for Lindsey. I left for work Sunday morning around 5:30 and did my normal work stuff. Then at 7:15 I got a text that said “umm my water may have just broke.” I responded “Are you sure, want me to come get you…or did you just pee the bed?” Lindsey called me and she described what happened and I told her I would leave ASAP.

I made it home by 8:00 and we grabbed everything and left in a few minutes. We were at the hospital before 9:00. They did some tests on Lindsey and said “yep, you are in labor.” The c-section was scheduled for Tuesday, so it was not too big of a deal that he was coming early. Our doctor was on-call that weekend, and she came in and said to get her prepped for surgery.

It went so fast, the complete opposite of Payton. The took Lindsey back to get the spinal shot (they had me put on my cool gown and mask). I thought they would have me go in with her since Lindsey hates needles. By the time they brought me into the room, Lindsey was on the table and the doctor was getting started.

Remember how before I described the weird smell? I guess our doctor uses the old fashioned blades instead of power tools and lasers. There was no machine shop smell this time. Another difference this time was that as soon as they took Logan over to clean him up, they had me go over to take pictures. Also, instead of moving him to the nursery to get cleaned up and spend some time other the heat lamp, they brought he and I to our room (they had a portable heat lamp and once he was warm enough they cleaned him up).

Another change from last time that was a bit odd was how the nurses informed us that Logan would stay in our room the entire time. Instead of before where you could ask to have the baby taken to the nursery so we could sleep. They did say they would take him for a bit, but the nurses made it sound like it was only under extreme circumstances. So the two nights were pretty rough for me. Logan did the whole newborn thing, you know, waking up like every hour and crying.

We ended up getting discharged a day early. We were home Tuesday night. I joke about my wife not being tough. If she gets a splinter, you would swear she was on the verge of death. Seriously, she has a cold and it is like the end of the world. And yet…remove a human being from her body via a fairly complex surgical procedure and she is like the toughest person ever. She never complained, granted she asked for pain meds, but all of the nurses kept saying how they kept forgetting she had a c-section because she was such an easy patient. She is a little more sore than she was when we came home with Payton, but she is still moving around and in good spirits.

The other question I am sure most of you are dying to ask is about Payton. She stayed at Lindsey’s mom’s house for a few days, but came to visit at the hospital each day. She was a little weird around Logan at first. She would ignore him and not want to see Logan or Lindsey. Later on she came over when I was holding him and she wanted to try and hold him. I let her put her arms around him and give him a kiss. Since being home, she likes to go up to him when he cries and say “don’t cry Logan.” She does get a little jealous of everyone coming here and giving him attention.

Logan weighed 7 lbs 13 oz. and he was 20 inches long. He was born at 10:37 a.m. We had our first appointment today and he only dropped to 7 lbs 7 oz. He has not lost all that much weight (compared to Payton at the same point). He keeps us up most of the night. At the hospital they told us to feed him every 3-4 hours, but he would scream after 2 hours like he was starving.

We decided to just go with bottle feeding. The whole breast-feeding ordeal was a bit much for Lindsey and she did not want to try again. It sucks because the nurses were a little judgmental at the hospital, but oh well. He is our kid, we can do what we want. I will say that it is nice just starting with bottles and not having to worry or feel totally helpless as your kid does not eat.

The pregnancy is over. Logan Alexander is here to stay. We could not be happier to have him in our family. Now we just have to wait for Samson to come home from Grandpa’s house in order to be truly complete.
