COVID-19 and Youth Sports

The PIAA decided to push the fall sports season back two weeks instead of canceling or possibly postponing until the spring. It seems that everyone has an opinion and it just depends on where you stand about the entire coronavirus.

This is what bothers me. This discussion about schools starting and sports moving forward should be about the actual risks and what we can do to mitigate those risks. Instead you have people screaming about how this is all fake and it will all be over after the election in November. You cannot have a serious discussion when a large portion of the people do not actually think it is a serious issue.

If we started from the point that the coronavirus is very serious and we are still a good bit away from an actual vaccine, then we can figure out whether or not high school sports should move forward. Should we shut everything down and hope that a vaccine comes around? Or is there some amount of acceptable risk that we are willing to take?

I do not have the answer here. I would not want to be in a position where I need to make that decision. Imagine a scenario where a football team ends up getting COVID-19 and one of the players dies from it. Awful to think about, but it is possible. Would you want that on your head? I would not. I would not be able to live with myself knowing that my decision cost a kid their life. It is easy to say that some risk is acceptable, but what if it is your kid.

Sadly, we cannot have this discussion. We are getting people screaming about Wolf being a tyrant and taking away rights. We have people saying that masks do not do anything and they should not have to wear them. If we cannot at least come to an agreement on the severity of the disease, then there is no hope of having a nuanced discussion about a complex issue.
