Tenet

I finally went to see Christopher Nolan’s newest film, Tenet. I am glad I did. The movie was definitely made for a theater. I was the only one there, so I did not have to worry about any social distancing.

The movie was incredible. It was what I have come to expect from Nolan. Looks amazing and the premise just blows your mind. I love that the previews never really gave too much away about the plot. I knew it had something to do with time-travel, but was not really sure after that.

If you enjoy Nolan films, particularly Inception, then I highly recommend this one. Or if you like time-travel movies, particularly ones that deal with causation, then seriously watch Tenet. I suggest you stop reading now because from here on out there will be some spoilers.

The cast was incredible. John David Washington and Robert Pattinson worked so well together. I would love to see more of their adventures together. It took me a minute to realize that Kenneth Branagh was the bad guy, he did a fantastic job of being menacingly terrifying, but then at the end, a bit tender and almost loving. I thought Elizabeth Debicki also crushed her role. The part where she says that she almost considered Andrei’s deal about her son was such a great scene.

The action scenes were intense. Especially at the end, when both teams are simultaneously attacking the site. You have regular bullets and explosions, plus inverted action to contend with. It was almost enough to break your brain. Also, the fact that the action scenes felt like they had real stakes because you never really knew if someone could die and then be saved before it happened. During the car chase scene, my heart was pounding.

Not to brag (but I am about to), I figured out during the fight scene during the Oslo robbery that Washington and Pattinson were fighting themselves. Okay, technically they were just fighting future Washington twice (I know, it was confusing, but makes sense when you see it happen). Also, another one of my favorite moments was was when Kat jumps off the boat and her past self sees her diving and earlier she told the Protagonist that she envied the freedom that Andrei’s girl had to just jump into the water.

Like Inception, this is a movie that I cannot wait to watch a few times to really appreciate all the different levels of complexity.
