Know Your President: Week Eight

Party: Republican

Fact One: This president was the first to visit Mexico and meet with the Mexican president. Incidentally, there was an assassin there that day who was disarmed by Frederick Burnham (Scouting enthusiasts may know that name) and a member of the Texas Rangers (Chuck Norris not Adrian Beltre).

Fact Two: Attempted to break up U.S. Steel, but the antitrust case was not taken up by Congress. Something tells me this president would not have been popular in Pittsburgh.

Fact Three: Invested heavily in Latin America as a way of keeping European powers diminished in the region. He figured it would help those nations and at the same time, keep the Monroe Doctrine strong. Unfortunately, many countries in Latin America did not like the idea of the United States exerting financial lordship over them. The Senate also was against the idea since they wanted to keep out of foreign affairs.

Fact Four: Supported free immigration. Vetoed a bill that would have imposed a literacy test.

Fact Five: Appointed six members to the Supreme Court. That is the third most behind George Washington and FDR. And this president did not win reelection, so he was only in office for four years.

Quotes:
“Too many people don’t care what happens so long as it doesn’t happen to them.”
“I am not in favor of having government do anything that private citizens can do as good or better”
“I would like to have an ample fund to spread the light of Republicanism, but I am willing to undergo the disadvantage to make certain that in the future we shall reduce the power of money in politics for unworthy purposes.”
