Fact One: This president oversaw one of the most corrupt administrations in history. He awarded no-bid contracts to his supporters, used government money to bribe judges, and sold government property for less than it’s worth to his cronies.
Fact Two: The president tried to buy Alaska from the Russian Empire, unfortunately the two parties could never agree on a price. They wanted to use Alaska for Mormon settlers.
Fact Three: Sent the Army to Utah to deal with Mormons, who he believed were defying federal authority and he was bothered by Brigham Young’s polygamous behavior.
Fact Four: He felt a federal slave code would protect slave-owners in the territories and that the Dred Scott case would settle the slavery issue.
Fact Five: Kansas was admitted as a state after much debate over whether or not to allow slavery. This president sided with Southern Democrats, despite being from the North.
