Fact Two: The president was sympathetic to Joseph Smith and his Mormons, who were being forcibly removed from Missouri, but could not intervene because he feared losing that states support in the election.
Fact Three: Put the annexation of Texas on hold because he did not want to agitate northern abolitionists by bringing in another slave state.
Fact Four: This president supported Spain’s side during the Supreme Court case United States v The Amistad.
Fact Five: Avoided war with the British over disputed land between Maine and New Brunswick. The Battle of Caribou ended up being the most Maine/Canadian battle ever as armed lumberjacks shouted at each other. I wish I was making this one up.
