Know Your President: Week Thirty-One

Party: Democratic-Republican

Fact One: This president continued major improvements to infrastructure, particularly in the Ohio area. These improvements to roads, railroads, and canals allowed cities like Pittsburgh to rapidly grow. Dahntahn is very nice, n’at.

Fact Two: He continued to fight against partisanship and the idea of political parties. Unfortunately he lost the fight by nominating Henry Clay to Secretary of State instead of the person he defeated in the election (since the Federalist Party was basically defunct at this point, there was just one party). His rival began campaigning on an anti-administration, pro-states rights platform almost immediately after the election.

Fact Three: Reached trade deals with numerous countries such as Denmark, Prussia, and the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Fact Four: Alienated Southerners by not allowing the forcible removal of the Muskogee people out of Georgia.

Fact Five: This president swore his oath of office on a Constitutional law book instead of the Bible.

Quotes:
“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone.”
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
“America… goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.”
