Know Your President: Week Forty-Three

Party: Republican

Fact One: He passed the Pure Food and Drug Act which established the Food & Drug Administration to help regulate food safety. 

Fact Two: This president basically invented the presidential press briefing by giving reporters a dedicated space inside the White House.

Fact Three: An avid conservationist, he set aside more federal land, national parks, and nature preserves than any president before him. He also shifted the control of national forests from the Department of the Interior (Bureau of Forestry) over to the Department of Agriculture, which renamed the agency the United States Forest Service.

Fact Four: Towards the end of his presidency, he believed that capitalists risked little, but gained huge rewards; whereas previous generations took many risks to gain so much. He believed that wealth redistribution would help the country avoid a revolution.

Fact Five: The first president to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He acted as the mediator between Russia and Japan.
