Super Bowl LVI

I thought this year’s Super Bowl ended up being an exciting game. Unfortunately it will probably be remembered for those two bad calls. The first one being that missed facemask that allowed the Bengals to score a touchdown. Then there was the very weak holding call on the Bengals that gave the Rams a first down and more attempts at a touchdown in the fourth quarter. That totally felt like a call the refs threw out there to even out the other bad call.

Quick rant. Everything should be reviewable. If Sean McVay wants to challenge the missed penalty on that touchdown, he should be allowed. Yes, it might take longer, but who really cares? And honestly, I do not think there would be that many more challenges. I mean, if you are wrong you lose a timeout. In a close game, it may not be something worth going after. OR there should be a judge in the booth somewhere who is watching the cameras and calls down to the head ref “hey, you guys missed a pretty flagrant facemask there.” These are those little things that could make football better, but for some reason people think would make the games take too long. Okay, one other improvement I would make: the ball. How hard would it be to put a sensor in the ball that would register when the ball crosses the goal line (maybe it records the time and if you have a play that needs reviewed, you go to the cameras and look at that exact time and then see if the player was down before that). This could also come in handy for snapping the ball and the play clock. The current system is one judge watches the clock, then when it hits 0, they turn to look to see if the ball is in the process of being snapped. That is why there are times when the play clock is definitely at zero, but they do not throw a flag.

Anyways, I thought both teams played well. I did predict the final play of the game. When it was 4th and 1, I told Lindsey that Aaron Donald was going to get a sack. You could just see that there was no one out there that was going to stop him at that moment. I guess he did not get a sack, but he was close, since Burrow sort of tossed it away. It was also crazy how we all knew that Cooper Kupp was getting the ball and the Bengals still could not stop him. That is not a knock on the Bengals, just a fact of how amazing Kupp has been this year.

I will not say some stupid cliche about how Joe Burrow is young and this will definitely not be his last time in the big game. You never know. Making it to the Super Bowl is incredibly difficult. Especially in an AFC that has Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, and MASON F*CKIN’ RUDOLPH!

Moving on to the halftime show! I need to preface it with what I wrote last year...

My favorite part of the Super Bowl is always the halftime show. Not because I am a huge fan of the performers or anything, but because I love reading the outrage of people on Facebook. Also, I do enjoy the entire spectacle of it. So much work goes into the show and it lasts like twenty minutes

This year…I loved it. I loved the performers. Like so many people my age, it took me back to that late teens and early twenties time period of life. I remember my freshman year of college when Eminem’s second album came out. You could hear it being played in just about every dorm room at all times.

The funny thing about this show, Dre is 57 years old. When the Rolling Stones performed in 2006, Mick Jagger was 62. Us Gen-X’rs and early Millenials have finally reached that point where we are the target audience. Our demographic has the spending power, so of course the commercials and halftime show are going to be about hitting that nostalgia sweetspot for us. And you know? Fuck yeah, it is our time. Screw the boomers and everyone else.
