Tatooine and Aging

I laugh when I see this meme. People get worked up over this, so much so that in the book, Kenobi, they explain that exposure to the harsh Tatooine sun can age a person’s appearance fairly quickly. Sure, that makes sense, but I always wonder if the characters were really that far off the ages of the actors.

Aunt Beru. The original actress was Shelagh Fraser, who was 57 when A New Hope was filmed. Bonnie Piesse played her in the prequels. ROTS was filmed in 2005, Bonnie was 22. The time between the end of ROTS and ANH is 19 years. Soooo that means Bonnie should look about 41, which is a 16-year difference between her age and Shelagh.

What about Uncle Owen? Phil Clark was 61 in ANH, while Joel Edgerton was 31 in ROTS, which gives us an 11-year difference. Not too terrible when you consider Owen Lars is a moisture farmer, who lives a harsh life.

And Obi-Wan Kenobi? Sir Alec Guinness was 63, and Ewan McGregor was 34. The difference is just ten years between Alec and Ewan. There are tons of actors who are in their 50s, who probably look the same age as me right now.

You do not really need some crazy in universe explanation for why the people look so much older. Actors and actresses continuously look younger and younger. Jennifer Aniston is 54, she still looks mid-30s, maybe 40. Hell look at people in the 1940s, twenty-year-olds back then look like 40somethings now. Age is just crazy sometimes. So yeah, 19 years of farming just about anywhere probably ages you. Unless that person spends tons of time and money on beauty products, to help keep those looks.
