Decades Project: 1940s Movie–It’s A Wonderful Life

I could not leave the 1940s without talking about one of the best movies from that decade. I was going to impose a rule that I could not use music or movies that I have posted about before, but it would be crazy not to mention It’s A Wonderful Life

I mentioned this movie when I wrote about my dad’s favorite movies. Over the years, watching it means more to me each year. For one thing, it makes me think about him and how much I miss him. But the story also resonates with me more. Having a family helps put you in the shoes of George. Not saying you cannot enjoy the movie if you do not have kids, I just mean that for myself, the movie resonates more now, than it did back then (I have to clarify because some of you get super worked up about this kind of topic).

Speaking of our boy, George Bailey, if you watch The Big Short, you quickly realize that Mr. Potter was maybe right. The old Bailey Savings & Loan is giving out mortgages to just about everyone in Bedford Falls, regardless if they have the necessary credit to secure the loan. Is that not what led to the housing market crash in 2008??? I just picture Steve Carell in Florida learning that the lenders are pushing every loan through.

So yeah, sit back this weekend and watch a Christmas classic, but maybe appreciate it from the point of view of the actual hero…old man Potter!
