Avengers: Endgame

Wow. It is hard to describe how I felt after seeing this movie. That I loved it is an understatement. It was the perfect way to end this journey that began eleven years ago with Iron Man. The movie has practically everything you could ask for in a three hour film: action, comedy, love, revenge, redemption, and loss.

It is crazy to think about all of these films and how I have seen each of them in the theater and with all of the different friends and family that have been with me. Whether it be Lindsey, Adam, Michelle, Jason, or sometimes all by myself. There have been great movies and there have been a few that were a little below average.

So now onto the fun stuff, you know…my actual thoughts about the movie. There will obviously be spoilers.

Seriously, SPOILERS!

I am not kidding, SPOILERS!

SPOILERS

Funny Stuff
There were a ton of funny jokes and lines. Some of my favorites:
-The America’s ass bit. Ant-Man was great as the comic relief throughout the movie. But the ass joke was probably my favorite. Especially hearing Captain America say “huh, it really is America’s ass.” Or whatever he says, I will paraphrase all lines at this point.
-Fat Thor!
-The Hail Hydra line. I thought that was such a great joke about the huge comic book controversy from a few years ago.
-Rhodey and Nebula watching Quill dance around and sing. I loved how they set it up, showing us what we saw in the first GOTG, but then showing him without the music. Looks like a crazy person, also getting the stone from him was fairly simple, haha.

Action
Okay, there were tons of great fight scenes. But the best was Captain America/Iron Man/Thor versus Thanos. The fact that it was similar to their first encounter with each other in the first Avengers film, but also had great moments where we see the unstoppable power of Thanos. The best part is when Cap picks up Mjolnir and Thor cheers that he knew he could do it. The other cool fight was seeing Captain America fight his past self.

Drama
The movie was chock full of it. Right from the beginning, we see what Clint was doing when the Snap occurred. It was heart-breaking watching him call for them. Also, seeing Tony happy with his daughter, then that problem of if they reverse things, will he lose her…I guess those scenes resonated with me more now than they would have a few years ago. I loved the Scott Lang scene when he is reunited with his daughter. Hell, I loved seeing how all the characters were handling the events five years later.

The death of Black Widow was sad, but the whole switching between each of them was probably a bit sillier than it needed to be. It seemed pretty obvious that it would be Natasha. Clint wanted to die, he was ready to meet his family. I felt like his would not be the bigger sacrifice. Or maybe that was just me.

The biggest tear jerker was Tony’s death (and the reunion with Peter). He sacrificed himself to use the Infinity Stones and defeat Thanos. Fortunately, Professor Hulk explained that messing with the past will not matter because the past is now the future or something like that. It reminded me of the line from Looper where Bruce Willis says you cannot explain time-travel easy without diagramming with straws.

The final scene, where Captain America returns the Stones and decides to spend his life with Peggy Carter. Old Steve gives over the shield to Sam. Oh man, that was a pretty goosebumpy moment.

There was also the moment when you see the sling-ring circles start to form and you know that Dr. Strange and the rest of the returned people will be showing up to fight Thanos and his army. Or when Captain Marvel drops in to beat the crap out of Thanos.

I could probably go on and on about the movie. I know I am probably leaving a ton of stuff out. Instead, I just want to end on the fact that it was an incredible movie. What Kevin Feige and the rest of the creative forces behind the MCU have done is beyond impressive.

I keep hearing people complain about the lack of post-credit scenes. However, I think it was quite fitting. This movie completes a chapter in the MCU. They did not need to prepare us for something else or have a funny scene to cap it off. It ended in the best way possible, the mantle being handed to the next generation. I cannot wait to see where the MCU goes from here.
