Game of Thrones: Winterfell

I will start every one of these posts off with this warning about spoilers. There will be plenty of spoilers. Seriously, if you have not watched the episode, do not read this post. I will also be mentioning stuff from the books. These are not straight up recaps of episodes, nor are they reviews. I will just mention the stuff I liked/disliked and probably give some opinions about what could happen next.

The season premiere has finally came and it was definitely worth the wait! I think this season, I will just write what I liked/disliked and any theories I have. No need for any recaps, there are plenty of those out there. And since I am lazy, you get bullet points!

-The episode was basically what I expected. I am shocked by the number of people out there who thought there would be tons of action this episode. So many characters need to be maneuvered into position. The Battle of Winterfell is going to happen soon and we need a ton of characters to be there.

-We also got so many of the reunions out of the way. My favorite was probably Arya & The Hound. Although, Tyrion and Sansa was great as well. I think we could see them end up together (hey, they are technically already married, haha).

-The only thing that bothered me was the dragon flight scene. Not because of how it was sort of whimsical, but because it could have been used for a different purpose. I think it would have been cooler to see Jon ride Rhaegal after it is revealed to everyone that Jon is actually a Targaryen. There could have been a moment where Daenerys does not believe it and then at some point, Rhaegal allows Jon to climb on and she says something like “only the blood of the dragon…” However, the show has not made it a point to mention that only those with the blood of old Valyria can ride a dragon, so that may have been lost on viewers.

-What is the weapon that Arya asked Gendry to make? My guess it is some kind of spear that has a detachable head she can use as a dagger. I know some people think she will be the one to defeat the Night King, but I think she takes down his undead dragon. I still think it is Bran who ends up defeating the NK. I do not think he kills the NK, I think that goes to Jon Snow.

-Did anyone else expect the Mountain to come in and kill Euron Greyjoy during or at least right after sex?

-I guess some people were underwhelmed by the Jon & Arya reunion. I thought it was pretty perfect given their personalities. I do not think they would get all emotional and start crying.

-Speaking of the Greyjoys…Theon redeemed himself, but also got what he deserved from his sister. This episode took the moving characters into a position a little too literal by letting us know that Yara would be on the Iron Islands in case Daenerys needed a hasty retreat.

-I am always confused by how many people see Bran as the main hero of the story. I think of him as exposition or a deus ex machina. But if you go read theories, people seem to think he will be traveling back in time like Doc Brown and changing all sorts of things. Or he will be doing all sorts of other crazy things. My guess is he wargs into the dragon, causing it to slow or pause in it’s attack, which gives Arya a chance to kill it. The NK is thrown from his beast and Jon attacks and defeats him.

-I do think Bran is the one who convinces everyone to allow Jaime to live. I mean, if Bran can forgive the guy who tossed him out of a window, then maybe Daenerys can forgive him as well. I wonder if Bran will explain to everyone that Aerys II was going to murder all of King’s Landing and that Jaime did the right thing by killing him.

So, what did everyone think of the episode? Was anyone else worried that Tormund might die before seeing Brienne one last time?
