Gideon the Ninth

A friend recommended the book Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir and since I had a bunch of Audible credits, I decided to give it a shot. I am not going to lie, reading the description, I did not think it would be my type of book. Futuristic fantasy does not typically strike my fancy. I prefer my fantastical stories to be set in ancient times, no spaceships. With that being said, I enjoyed this book immensely.

Tamsyn Muir has an incredible style. At times it feels like something written in the 19th century, but then mixes in modern phrases and slang. She balances it out quite well because it could easily turn into something annoying or distracting. I look forward to reading the next book in this trilogy.

Without spoiling much, I would like to say that I loved that Gideon was already an incredible swordsman and fighter at the beginning of the story. We did not have a quick training session where we are supposed to buy that she becomes a master in a few days. I also was shocked by the ending and wonder how this will all turn out. Again, I do not want to spoil anything.

If you are looking for something different with slight horror and humor, mixed with fantasy and science fiction, this book is perfect.
