Josh’s NFL Mock Draft–2021 Edition

The NFL Draft is coming up next week. Year after year we hear from multiple experts, such as Kiper or McShay, and it always seems like they get about five of the first rounders correct. I have no clue if that is accurate, but it just seems that way.

I figured I might as well give it a shot. Why the hell not? How hard it can it be? Probably insanely hard. Here is why it is difficult (in my humble opinion): there are people involved. I know that sounds stupid, but there are 32 teams in the league, each team probably has a handful of people who contribute to this decision. It is impossible to know what they are all thinking, it is impossible to know what they all value and perceive as the best option for their pick.

Allow me to explain. Everyone says Team A should take WR X, but they have met with that player and they do not like him, so they take WR Y or maybe they decide to take a LB with the pick because they think WR Z will be around in the second round and they like that guy just as much as X & Y. It may seem crazy, but teams know what they want and what they need.

And yes…I already have my excuse if this bombs terribly. Without further ado…

2021 NFL DRAFT

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars–Trevor Lawrence QB–Clemson
This one is obvious. I think the Jaguars have been fairly open about who they are taking. I flip-flop on whether or not I think he is worth the hype.
  2. New York Jets–Zach Wilson QB–BYU
When I watched him at BYU, I was sold on him. Now though, I am having doubts. Is he the right fit for the Jets? Can he handle the New York pressure?
  3. San Francisco 49ers–Justin Fields QB–Ohio State University
I know, I know, there are a ton of reports out there that the 49ers like Mac Jones and blah blah blah. But I cannot imagine they would want to move on from JimmyG for Mac Jones.
  4. Atlanta Falcons–Trey Lance QB–North Dakota State University
Matt Ryan is at least 83 years old. I think the Falcons take Lance with the idea of having him learn behind Ryan for a year. I do not know what to think of Lance. There is talent, but…I do not think I would take him at #4.
  5. Cincinnati Bengals–Kyle Pitts TE–University of Florida
If you read enough mock drafts from experts, they have the Bengals taking Penei Sewell, but I think they take Pitts. A tight end like Kyle Pitts would be a fantastic weapon for Joe Burrow.
  6. Miami Dolphins–Ja’Marr Chase WR–LSU
Tua needs a top tier receiver. Maybe that will help him throw more than two yard check downs. Chase did not play last year, but I think he is still the best WR of the bunch.
  7. Detroit Lions–Patrick Surtain II CB–Alabama
I am not sure about this one. I think this pick gets traded. My guess is the Patriots trade up to here. Not sure why because I honestly do not think they would need to if they are trying for a QB. The Lions need a cornerback and Surtain is tops.
  8. Carolina Panthers–Penei Sewell OT–Oregon
Sam Darnold will need some protection. Honestly, I think Darnold to the Panthers ends up being a better move than having to draft someone else. Now they can focus on building some more around him and Christian McCaffrey.
  9. Denver Broncos–Micah Parsons LB–Penn State
My brother would be happy. I am 50-50 on this one. If the Patriots do not trade up, I could see the Broncos taking Mac Jones. But, I think they may give Drew Lock another year.
  10. Dallas Cowboys–Rashawn Slater OT–Northwestern
The Cowboys confound me. I think a tackle would be their best bet, but who knows what they will do.
  11. New York Giants–DeVonta Smith WR–Alabama
Is Daniel Jones good? Who knows, but having a fantastic receiver like DeVonta Smith will at least give him more options. That offense will be decent with him and Saquon.
  12. Philadelphia Eagles–Jaylen Waddle WR–Alabama
I originally thought the Eagles would take Smith back when they had the sixth pick. They will have to settle for Waddle, who is also an incredibly talented receiver. Jalen Hurts will enjoy actually having a receiver.
  13. Los Angeles Chargers–Christian Darrisaw OT–Virginia Tech
Like most of the young QBs out there, offensive line help is needed. Justin Herbert will have plenty of time back there with Darrisaw blocking for him. My initial attempt at a draft had Kyle Pitts falling here, and my god, if that happened, the Chargers would be beyond ecstatic.
  14. Minnesota Vikings–Jaycee Horn CB–South Carolina
Another team that I have no clue. They need a cornerback and I think Horn is probably the best fit. I do not know.
  15. New England Patriots–Mac Jones QB–Alabama
I think they trade up to take Jones. Honestly, I think he would fit that team. Oddly enough, if the 49ers take him (which would really blow things up, since my guess is the Falcons take Fields then, and then that leaves Lance up there…who knows where he goes). If the Patriots do not take Jones here, then my guess is they take Kyle Trask in the second round.
  16. Arizona Cardinals–Najee Harris RB–Alabama
The Cardinals need a back and Harris is the best one in my opinion.
  17. Las Vegas Raiders–Jaelan Phillips EDGE–Miami
Sure. May be time to speed through some of these…
  18. Miami Dolphins–Travis Etienne RB–Clemson
Okay, the Dolphins take Etienne as another offensive piece for Tua.
  19. Washington Football Team–Teven Jenkins OT–Oklahoma State
  20. Chicago Bears–Alijah Vera-Tucker IOL–USC
  21. Indianapolis Colts–Kwity Paye EDGE–Michigan
  22. Tennessee Titans–Greg Newsome II CB–Northwestern
  23. New York Jets–Azeez Ojulari EDGE–Georgia
  24. Pittsburgh Steelers–Landon Dickerson IOL–Alabama
The Steelers need o-line help before anything. I know people think they need a RB, but honestly, without a line, it does not matter who you have running the ball if there are no holes.
  25. Jacksonville Jaguars–Rashod Bateman WR–Minnesota
  26. Cleveland Browns–Christian Barmore IDL–Alabama
I initially had them taking an EDGE or maybe LB, but they signed Jadeveon Clowney, so maybe they can afford to to add an interior d-lineman.
  27. Baltimore Ravens–Trevon Moehrig S–TCU
  28. New Orleans Saints–Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah LB–Notre Dame
  29. Green Bay Packers–Kadarius Toney WR–University of Florida
  30. Buffalo Bills–Jayson Oweh EDGE–Penn State
I half expected Oweh to go in the second round, but I think the Bills would be crazy to pass on him. I am probably biased.
  31. Kansas City Chiefs–Samuel Cosmi OT–Texas
  32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers–Javonte Williams RB–UNC

So there you have it. My mock draft. If I get five right, I will be happy.
