The Last Human: A Novel

I finally finished the debut novel from Zack Jordan. I bought it last summer when I took the kids to Altoona. I figured it would be a good book if we ever went back to the beach or on a plane. Well it only took me a year and a half to finish it. I probably burnt through the first 30% fairly quickly, but then it went downhill and I just never felt like picking it up again.

I do not want to trash the book. I think it started off as a great coming of age story/hero’s quest type tale. The relationship between Sarya (the last human) and her adoptive mother, Shenya (who is an insectoid type alien who is a hardcore killer) is intriguing. Same with some of the questions about intelligence and the sub-intelligences that have zero Network rights.

However, as the book goes on, it turns into Jordan giving us some of his random philosophical musings. It seriously got weird at points and I just wanted it to end. Now, with that all being said. I hope Zack Jordan can follow this one up with something better. Keep that stuff from the beginning, keep the impressive world-building, just drop the weird end.

Also, I should mention that this book could be adapted into a cool movie. I think you could simplify the ending and make it more interesting.
