I was excited for this book because it featured Reath Silas. Unfortunately, it was not good. When I say not good, I mean that it was terrible. The plot was stupid. The Nihil plan was nonsensical (they were stealing the ships to go to Starlight and pretend to be the rescue mission and kill people…instead of just replacing their depleted fleet). I realize there are some spoilers there, but if you are following these books, then you probably already read Fallen Star. If not…oh well, sorry.
Anyways here are more spoilers. There were a few things I did enjoy. I liked Kantam Sy explaining to Cohmac about his time away from the Jedi Order. That story, plus a few more of these books focusing on the padawans, really helps cement a few ideas about the way the Jedi Order works. I have always thought it was weird that someone like Ahsoka was still a padawan, while she was out leading dangerous missions. The same goes for Reath, Vern, Lula, and a few others. Okay, Vern is a Knight, but she is the same age as the others. But, in this book, it is more clear that physical skills and abilities with the Force are not the reason to promote a padawan to Knight. It is more the understanding of our own emotions and how those emotions relate to the Force. I would actually be more willing to read other books focusing on padawans if this was what they focused on.
One of the things I hate though, is that each book that is about a padawan ends up having to explain how they are like the best ever and they are almost at the point of being knighted. I want to focus on someone younger, who is really struggling with the emotions (technically that is what Ram’s story is about, but it definitely is muddled in this book).
I really hated that Yoda just shows up randomly to save the day. They made it seem like Yoda was missing and no one could find him. But he was on a ship training younglings. We knew he was on sabbatical. We knew he was still alive because Avar could feel him when she did her Force thing where she connected with all the Jedi. So why do Ram and Reath worry about Master Yoda??? It made no sense.
Anyways, this book was blah. Stay tuned though, I am working on my casting call for The High Republic!
