Know Your President: Week Sixteen

Party: Democratic

Fact One: This president allowed over 400,00 refugees to settle in America.

Fact Two: The United States became the first country to recognize the State of Israel, which the president did against some of his cabinet’s wishes.

Fact Three: He had a unique way of dealing with a major railroad workers strike: he wanted to draft them all into the army and force them to work that way. Seems a bit extreme.

Fact Four: He tried for civil rights reform because he was disgusted by the way black soldiers returning from the war were treated in the South. Unfortunately, Congress was not able to change the filibuster, so things did not change.

Fact Five: In his first year as president, he approved the bombing of two cities…with atomic weapons. I think this hint should make it easy, right?

Quotes:
“America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.”
