Remember when I wrote about what you would need to save boxing? A hero and a villain? Well, the same is true with other sports, particularly golf. Golf always needs a good rivalry: Palmer/Nicklaus, Woods/Mickelson, Daly/Putting. Personally, I think the sport should embrace and push the Brooks Koepka & Bryson DeChambeau.
They do not seem to like each other. Whenever one of them gets the chance to throw a dig in about the other, they do not hesitate. I cannot even remember when it began. I feel like it was last year with the slow play stuff. For those that do not remember, there were complaints about DeChambeau playing too slowly and if I remember, Koepka gave his opinion. Then Bryson gave a note to Koepka’s caddy or something.
This year things decided to go another step. During quarantine DeChambeau decided to get ripped. He added a ton of muscle and made comments about Brooks (who is known for being muscular and was featured in The Body issue of ESPN the Magazine). Bryson said that Brooks does not even have a six pack. Koepka responded by saying that he was two short of a six pack, while pointing to his four majors trophies.
Then came the ants. Bryson wanted a ruling from an official about an anthill or an ant. If you saw the video, he came off like a bit of a whiner. Naturally, Brooks would not this one go. He ended up in a similar area and says to his caddy that he things he saw an ant near his ball. He then laughs and says he is kidding.
The PGA needs to pair them together more often. Especially if they are playing well (or if they are both playing poorly, maybe make those second rounds more interesting, haha). I want to see a little drama while they play.
You may be asking who I root for in this rivalry. It is funny, you would think I would be a Bryson DeChambeau fan. He uses analytics to work on his weaknesses. He uses irons that are very unique. They are all the same length and he uses the same swing plane. I think that is pretty cool. And yet, for some reason, he just bothers me.
Brooks Koepka is super cocky and he has no problem taking shots at just about anyone. He has made comments about Rory, Dustin Johnson, and probably others that I cannot remember off the top of my head. I should probably dislike the guy….and yet, I like watching him golf. So I suppose I am rooting for the villain. I am okay with it.
