Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

If you remember, I loved the first movie. I have been patiently waiting for five years for the sequel, and you know what? It lived up to and exceeded my expectations. They found a way to add even more Spider-People without having it feel crowded. The movie was charming, but also had some fantastic battle scenes. Oh yeah, and the cliffhanger was one of the best we had in years.

Instead of doing my normal, like/dislikes, I just want to talk about the overall plot, which means there will be some major spoilers.

I did not see it coming. I thought for sure this would be another quest to stop something big from harming the multiverse. Like The Spot, it was funny how he was growing in power and wanting to be Spidey’s nemesis. But instead, the movie makes Miles the threat. When Miguel O’Hara attacks Miles, and then savagely reveals that Miles is the original anomaly because he should have never been bitten. It was a crushing moment.

The idea that those canon events have to happen for a “Spider-Man” to be who they are is just ridiculous, as Gwen realizes when her own dad says he quit the police force and is no longer a captain. She understands that those events can change and that Miles can save his father, or at the very least he has to try.

The movie ends with Miles teleporting to what he thinks is his universe. He decides to tell his mom that he is Spider-Man, but she has never heard of him. It is then that he realizes he is in the wrong universe, he is in the one where his spider came from. His dad is dead, his Uncle Aaron is alive, and Prowler turns out to be the Miles from that universe. Gwen is assembling the old team to find and save Miles. It was the perfect way to end the movie. I also loved that it did not have a mid/end credit scene. It would have taken way from that ending.

So what did you think of the movie? What were your favorite parts?
