This Is Us Season 5 Premiere

The new season of This Is Us premiered last night and it was an emotional roller coaster of an episode (technically two episodes). For those of you that do not watch the show, well you should skip this post. If you do watch the show, but have not watched the premiere, then you should hold off on this post because of spoilers. For the rest of you…enjoy.

-I loved that the show did not shy away from the pandemic or from the racial injustice, and civil unrest happening in our country. It actually felt how things are feeling for most of us now.

-The tension between Kevin & Randall was excellent. I loved how they were both writing texts and then the final version was just a short reply. Also, anyone notice that when Kevin texts he makes mistakes and the he allows the phone to autocorrect (not a big thing, but I like that simplistic realism).

-Randall’s speech to Kate. At first it felt like he was being a jerk, but when he explains that he is not going to hug her and tell her everything is okay because where would that leave him. How many of us have felt this way? We always do everything to make other people comfortable. We sacrifice our own well-being in order to keep others happy, and sometimes that is not healthy.

-Kevin and Madison are super cute together. I am happy this is a thing. Not just the twins, but that they are starting to fall in love with each other.

-The big reveal was the ending when we see that Randall’s birth mom actually survived the overdose. Obviously this will end up being a big part of the season and it could either be really good, or it could end up being really dumb. I am confident the writers will do a good job, but it makes me nervous because this kind of thing is what takes good shows down…prove me wrong This Is Us.

-And finally we have to wonder when we will learn about Toby and Kate. Remember during last seasons flash-forwards we never saw them in the future…when Jack’s child is born, the sister shows up, but not Kate and Toby. And when they go to Kevin’s house for Rebecca’s last moments, we see Toby, but no Kate. I suppose I should have flipped those around, Rebecca passing would be before Jack’s child (how do I know? Kevin’s kids are teenagers in that scene).

So what were your favorite things from the episode and what are your theories for this season?
