Myrtle Beach 2023

Sometimes I am wrong about stuff. It does not happen often, but every once in a while it does happen. Oh I suppose you want to know what I am talking about, huh? I have said before to Lindsey that I would like to go somewhere else, and that it would be nice to do a vacation with just us. Well, this trip was sort of like that and you know what? It is much better to have a place with everyone. Lindsey was correct. Adam and Kayla were down at Myrtle Beach, but they did not stay with us. Why have a family vacation if you are not with family.

Payton loves swimming, but she had no one to swim with. Her cousin was not with her during the day, and Logan continues to be afraid of going in the pool. It is so weird because he did so well during his swim lessons. I think it is the stupid floaty thing he wears. I want him to stop wearing it and either wear regular floaties, or just get used to being without them.

Anyway, speaking of Payton and her swimming, she got so much better on this trip. It was funny, the first day she was acting like she was last year. Basically forgot all the stuff from swim class. But the next day, her excitement quelled a bit, and she wanted to swim with me. She listened for once and worked on things from class. She also started swimming above water. I got her to dog paddle, which was nice since it allowed her to swim through deeper ends of the pool without, you know, drowning. My favorite thing I noticed is that she started to adapt and combine the different things she learned. For example, if I threw her in the water, she would go under. But instead of immediately coming up and trying to find the edge, she would hit the bottom, push off and start swimming in a direction underwater. Then, she would come up for air, then decide whether to go back under or dog paddle across.

So did we do other stuff on this vacation? Well yeah. We ate at a bunch of really great restaurants (The Claw House, Rioz Brazillian Steakhouse, Nacho Hippo, Donut Man), we played mini-golf (Lindsey is definitely better than me at miniature golf…also, Logan got a hole in one!), Payton did the mermaid makeover again, Logan built an RC car, and we did Top Golf.

On the way home, we stopped at the North Carolina Zoo, like last year, and then did not get home until like 2:30 a.m. Definitely a smart decision. We ate at a place called The Golden Leaf Bistro, which is in Danville, Virginia. It was very good, but holy shit was it expensive. Like I am used to beach expensive, but was a bit shocked by $9 kid meals.

We had a fun trip. Hopefully we have learned a lesson here. I think we will book a place for all of us for next year ASAP. One of the things we discussed on the way home was making this trip a yearly thing, and just booking the same house each year. Find a place we like, and just get it. Book if for the same week, that way each year when we discuss our vacation schedule at work, we know that we need whatever week in whatever month off for the beach.
