Friday Five–Droids!

Droids are such a huge part of Star Wars. Whether it be the Battle Droids running around saying “Roger Roger” or a scary bounty hunter droid ready to do Darth Vader’s bidding, droids come in all shapes and sizes. They fill almost every role imaginable (whether in-universe, or as the story needs). So I thought this Friday, I would rank my favorite droids.

Before I get started, I need to mention that my favorite two are R2-D2 & C-3PO. The original droids. The first time we meet them is the opening of the movie. They are comic relief at times (Threepio is always afraid, Artoo always a little too brave). But in the end, they are like these two best friends, who look out for each other, while at the same time getting on each other’s nerves.
I think the first few minutes of the two droids on Tatooine, where they bicker, then split up encapsulates their relationship perfectly. As C-3PO struggles through the sand, he says that R2 will not fare much better, but then when they are reunited aboard the Jawa Sandcrawler, Threepio is ecstatic to see his little friend.ย
Okay, now onto a few honorable mentions…
ย

ย SM-33, the pirate droid from The Skeleton Crew and JJ-5145 from The High Republic books. SM-33 gets a nod because of his no nonsense attitude, and sense of duty when it comes to following a captain’s orders. JJ-5145 is an annoying droid, who Elzar Mann sends to Stellan Gios, but if you look into it, the droid is named after a cancer survivor (JJ-5145 is his Twitter handle…it is a cool story).
FIVE

BB-8.ย This little ball droid could easily be just another R2 ripoff, but he somehow ends up having a very distinct personality.
FOUR

L3-37. Lando’s true love. A droid that wants to lead the droid uprising and revolution.
THREE

ย IG-11. Bounty hunter turned nurse droid. His sacrifice to save Grogu was one of those moments that helped elevate The Mandalorian.
TWO

K-2SO. I must be a sucker for droids sacrificing themselves to save the day. K-2SO cracked me up in Rogue One, while at the same time managing to be a bit terrifying at times. The rescue scene in Andor, when K just calmly walks in and takes everyone out was excellent. Lots of Imperial soldiers being thrown into walls.
ONE

ย C1-10P. The ultimate agent of chaos. Chopper once went undercover as an Imperial droid at the Academy. It would take all day to just list all of Chopper’s heroic deeds. The droid is old, cranky, slightly psychopathic, as well as being a prankster. What is not to love???
